Julia Andrews has been a GRE tutor since 2003 after earning a near perfect on the math section of the exam. In all, she has nearly 20 years of tutoring experience under her belt. That's given her plenty of time to develop and modify her craft, helping students who are math phobic or math forgetful and figuring out what it takes for them to "get it." When she isn't tutoring students, she enjoys spending time with her family and participating in various sports.

Efficient teaching + online videos = great value

I'm a tutor and I bought this book to use with my clients. Sometimes people need to hear an explanation to a problem in a few different ways for the concept to really sink in. I bought this book because there are youtube videos that correspond to the practice sets at the end of each chapter. So once my clients are done with their sessions with me, they can also get additional teaching when they study on their own. The author did a good job of writing problems that are tricky or have some twist that's similar to what you'd see on the actual test. I even got fooled a few times!
The book does a good job of providing you with a study plan or if you just need to spot check, the plan lists each concept and its corresponding chapter, youtube video, and section in the official GRE guide.
I would've liked to see important tidbits or common mistakes printed somewhere in the margins. I think it would be a good way to call attention to things that should be kept in the back of your mind while you study or to use for last minute skimming. Since this is only a first edition, maybe something like this could make it to the next edition?
Overall I think this a cheap and efficient study package that can also be considered a bare bones online GRE Math course. At less than $20, I think this book and the videos are worth a try if you're looking for something different.

Great Resource for GRE test takers

I think when you are preparing for an exam like the GRE you really need to know what style of learning works best for you. For me I tend to gravitate more towards visual tools (like YouTube) where I can see concepts explained and problems solved versus just doing problems in a book and looking at the explanations in the back.
What I really loved about "GRE Math Simplified with Video Solutions" and why I highly recommend it is that its the best of many worlds. Each chapter of the book covers a math concept found on the exam in a very simple, straightforward way with video explanations for the problem set (at end of each chapter). It then cross references the chapter to problems from the "Official Guide to the GRE" book for additional review.
For example Chapter X "Rates and Work Problems"
- The book will explain the concept of what a rate or work problem looks like, how to solve different flavors of them all with examples that you can solve to help you practice these skills.
- Then you'll get the problem set at the end of the chapter
- Then you can go on-line and watch the vid's of how to solve these problems
- And for additional practice you can do matching problems from the Official Guide to the GRE
Lastly,I would say that the book is very helpful with simplifying concepts. Its not a strategy book where you analyze each problem and start working something to solve it. The book in my opinion is geared for an audience of people who want to know and understand the concepts covered on the exam versus rote memorization. Doesn't mean that you read the book and now your a math genius but it does mean you'll become a mathlete and with continual practice you'll get stronger, better and more confident. I took the exam using this book and didn't get the score I was looking for but I stayed with it, keep using it because its a great reference and practiced, practiced and well practiced some more and boom...got the score!

I wish I had find this book sooner! It is perfect for brushing up on the math that I knew how to do once upon a time but desperately need to cement the concepts in once again for taking the gre. The book works through a specific concept and then immediately gives you problems to work out to cement the concept little by little instead of reviewing an entire section and then giving you problems; which I have found overwhelming with other test prep books. Julia's YouTube videos are also amazing to work through a problem. She is so clear in breaking down a problem that at initial glance looks very complicated and eases the anxiety I have been having! I have only been using the book for a couple of days but the clarity of the book is shaving off so much time I have been spending in studying the math concepts with other test prep materials.
