Authentic Work of Yoga Asanas

NOTE: The text of this encyclopedia is in English, but the works referred to and many of the general words used are English transliterations of Sanskrit.

Asanas are the easiest part of the eight limbs of Raja Yoga. They are easier to practice than the rest of Yoga. Their popularity has grown throughout the world in the last 50+ years, and practice of asanas has mistakenly become synonymous with Yoga practice.

As the popularity grew, Yoga centers and schools sprang up fast. But the confusion and misinformation on the subject also grew. Traditional, authentic knowledge was and continues to be neglected, and 'Yoga' has become limited to asana practice.

Practitioners of authentic Yoga are still plenty. This encyclopedia will interest mostly the research-oriented students who are seriously into Yoga Science and Philosophy.

The author, Dr M L Gharote, collected the material for this work for many years. He is a disciple of renowned sage Swami Kuvalayananda. Both the author and the Swami passed before the publication of the book. But a third generation member of the family, Dr Manmath M Gharote managed to work on the details and published it.

The amount of research that has gone into this reference masterpiece is incredible. The lengthy introduction gives the reader a good idea of every aspect of Yoga as well as the work that has gone into this book. Many interesting observations are made throughout (for example, to name one, Yoga was not generally used for general treatment of diseases in the ancient times. It is only in later works like Satkarma Sangraha that yoga practices are used as remedies for certain disorders).

The long 10 page list of disorders that may be alleviated through Yoga practice is impressive. The source is given for each entry. The 12 page Bibliography section is even more grand, listing ancient authentic works consulted by the author. The section of asanas (388 pages), arranged alphabetically, is truly amazing. Each asana has an illustration, the Sanskrit name, and detailed direction/physical technique to do it, and the source(s). Benefits of the asana are given in many cases.

There are nine Appendices: Asanas from Mexican culture with photos of sculptures, Asanas from the Tibetan culture with illustrations, Asanas from Thai postcards with photos, Kon Fong movements of China illustrated and described, Bibliography, Aikapada asanas with pictures, Sahajasana with pictures, and Meanings of the names of asanas.

Such an exhaustive, authentic, 'modern' work is very rare and extremely hard to find.

The passion of a Pastor

This is a great manual for not only a new Minister, but a great reminder for the established Minister as well. It reminds you to love your sheep above all.
The specific topics are ones we will be dealing with in our Ministries and it is very beneficial to have a foundation of how to handle them.

I no longer have psoriasis thanks to this book

I have suffered from severe scalp psoriasis for 14 years. I have very think brunette hair, making my scalp particularly hard to treat. After trying every medicine under the sun, both prescription and over the counter, the only thing that ever worked for me were injections. I was on Enbrel from 2009-2011 and then Stelara from 2011-2013.

When I decided to get pregnant, I had to stop all of my meds. Pregnancy kept my symptoms relatively at bay, but postpartum, my skin erupted, and fast. I had lesions in places I'd never seen them before. 90% of my scalp had thick lesions and perhaps worse, I had 4" lesions around my nipples, making it very difficult and uncomfortable to breastfeed.

I came across this book on Amazon while shopping for alternative treatments. Due to the compelling reviews, I figured I'd give it a shot. I followed the system nearly to a "t" for the first 3 weeks. I did not do any hydrotherapy or home enemas, but I did a 2-day apple cleanse, cut out all sugar, white flour, nightshades and coffee, and began a regime of Slippery Elm Bark tea in the mornings and lemon water throughout the day. Since then, I have stayed 100% off nightshades but have reintroduced very limited quantities of white flour, sugar and decaf black coffee.

Within one week the lesions on my nipples were 90% gone. Within two weeks, the lesions on my body started to fade. Within four weeks, 75% of my body lesions were gone. As of today, which has been about 5 weeks since I started the regime, my scalp and body are 95% clear. I am honestly in a state of shock. I feel like telling everyone I know about Pagano's theories.

A couple notes:

** I found sea salt baths to be helpful as my body healed itself. Pagano recommends epsom salt baths (using 4 pounds of salt!), but I had read about people having success with Pink Himalayan Sea Salt, so I tried that instead. SF Salt sells it for a really great price.

** I used a topical prescription treatment to help speed things along (Clobex spray), but I plan to stop using it in the next week or so as I get closer to 100% clear.

** I found Burt's Bees Miracle Salve to be a great product for my nipples. I had to avoid all medications in that area due to breastfeeding.

** I discovered that my baby's Burt's Bees Baby Shampoo & Wash worked really well for my hair and scalp. Plus it smells delicious. I have since switched to the adult version of Burt's Bees Shampoo and think the gentle formula has been a welcome change for my scalp as it heals.

** Pagano recommends a pretty large list of supplements. I couldn't commit to the whole list due to personal preference and breastfeeding, but I have been taking 1000mg Flaxseed Oil, 200mg Milk Thistle, a pre/post-natal multi-vitamin (contains Zinc and Vitamin A), and 100mg Colace (stool softener). Instead of taking an additional 1000mg of Fish Oil, I've just been making it a point to each fish at least 4 days a week.

To anyone considering trying Pagano's 'diet', I urge you to not be afraid of what seems like an overwhelming list of 'to-do's' and 'not-to-do's'. I have found the diet very easy to follow and actually quite fulfilling. It's been nice to be cooking again and eating more healthy foods. Pizza has been hard to give up, but when your skin clears up like mine did, you won't feel too bad about missing out on a slice. Seeing amazing results sure makes the regime seem a lot easier to execute.

I am so grateful for discovering this book and I encourage you to try it if you're a psoriasis sufferer.

It had been getting worse and worse lately

I’ve had psoriasis my entire life. It had been getting worse and worse lately. I have avoided any systemic medications because the side effects are all so scary. It had finally gotten so bad, however, covering my knees, elbows, and abdomen, that I went to my doctor to talk about a new medication that came out (Otezla) that works slightly differently and was no so scary sounding. She was enthusiastic but warned that the insurance company probably wouldn’t pay for it until I tried all the others first. She was right. I was still not willing to try the others though.
Then I stumbled on this book in a blog somewhere and decided to give it a try. I had tried the paleo auto-immune protocol which helped somewhat but never cleared my skin up entirely. I read the online preview and started the diet protocol while waiting for the book to arrive. The book mentions that patience is required and it can take 3-4 months to see any changes. For me they were immediate.
For the first week my energy was very low but now it is better than ever, staying level throughout the day to the point that I have cut out caffeine as well and feel no need for it.
Basically there is no reason not to try what is suggested in the book. It's a very healthy diet for pretty much anyone, regardless of whether or not they have psoriasis.

Cure your psoriasis!

OK- I purchased this book 3 weeks ago. I have been suffering with Psoriasis for 20 years (I am now 57). My affected areas do not change at all- large patch on upper leg, patch on shoulder and all through the scalp (which is the worst!). I have read through the diet section of the book and made a commitment 16 days ago to completely change my diet as directed. Amazingly, my scalp is about 70% clear in such a short time! Leg and shoulder only showing slight improvement but not really to be expected for 90 days or so. Bottom line- this "appears" to be a life changer for me. Your are what you eat!!!! Don't suffer any more- make the commitment and see the results. I will update in about 30 days.

Update 9-17-15: after following the diet "somewhat" for 10 months I can say my psoriasis is greatly improved. My scalp is about 50% clear. The large patch on my leg is not much better. A patch on my shoulder is about 50% cleared up. No new patches have surfaced and I am not laying in bed itching like crazy anymore when trying to get to sleep. I will admit that I am not following the diet 100% by any means. I basically cut out most foods with preservatives, alcohol (I do have a couple glasses of wine on the weekends), diet coke (used to drink 2 per day), most refined sugar, pasta, shellfish, red meat, night shades and all fried foods. I am not drinking any of the suggested tea and still eat a fair amount of wheat bread (can't live without it!). Hope this helps you too!
