Move Over February!

In this book Jeff Christopherson and Mac Lake have not revealed the “keys” to the kingdom, rather they have illuminated some of the “secrets” of the kingdom lived out by Jesus himself. We only have two occasions in the New Testament when Jesus used the word “church”. But each gospel reverberates, dozens of times, with his use of the term “kingdom”. Rest assured these secrets are not “pie-in-the-sky” platitudes but gospel truth able to assist church planters in planting churches with a "huge degree of practicality". My favorite book on disciple making (and church planting) has always been Robert Coleman’s Master Plan of Evangelism. I read it every year in the month of my birth. Move over February, I think I found another classic in the making that I need to revisit again and again and again…..

Have your highlighter handy with this one!

Answering the call to plant a church or to be a church planting team member is not an easy journey, but Jeff and Mac have provided a resource in Kingdom First that is an easy read and an extremely practical tool. What appears in the pages of Kingdom First I have been blessed to live out- both in serving on a core group with Mac at a church plant in Myrtle Beach, SC, and as a planting support player with Jeff through the North American Mission Board. Both men share their passion for planting as a key to sustainable Kingdom growth thoughtfully and pragmatically. Their heart leaps out as I read it! Kingdom First reads as a gentile playbook for planting churches that plant churches. I think those called to plant churches or to serve as a church planting team member will have a hard time putting this book down or leaving its pages black and white. It's that good!

A beautiful blend of depth and relevance!

It is rare to be able to have a resource on church planting that lays both a solid theological foundation combined with relevant practical expression in one work. Christopherson and Lake have given us both in Kingdom First. From a missiological perspective, this book will expand your ability to see the necessary components to advance the Kingdom through a God-glorifying movement of establishing new communities of faith. From a practitioner's perspective, you will see a clear path to take in understanding and preparing for the high call of church planting. This book is both a beautiful blend of depth and relevance. These two guys have produced a work that not only serves as a guide for church planting but will challenge and inspire any leader and disciple-maker. Every pastor and potential church planter should make this a "must read" and "multiple-read" book!

A review of 200 or 300 words cannot do justice to a book like this: it is the summation of a great critic's most fundamental beliefs--something like a dying Bernstein's last performance of Mahler's ninth, though in this case a lot less sad. In fact, this book of essays represents Bloom at his most celebratory, and there's a wonderful, vigorous energy about it. Why, one wonders, reading it, do we bother reading anybody but Shakespeare, Dante, or Chaucer? The argument for Shakespeare is particularly compelling. Bloom believes that Shakespeare is the canon: that he defines for the Western world the standards by which we judge all literature. And more: he defines for us what we are ourselves, what we understand of human nature. This argument, offered with Bloom's customary flare for the controversial, is akin to the remark that all philosophy is a footnote to Plato, and like it, is probably in large measure true. Thus, modern psychology doesn't add very much to what people could have already learned from reading Shakespeare because Shakespeare defines the limits of what we know: we can't get beyond or outside him. Certainly, experience teaches that Bloom is right; indeed, the evolution of human consciousness seems to have taken one of its periodic jolts forward about the time of Shakespeare, and he above all seems to have captured the entire scope of what was new. As Bloom points out, Shakespeare is universally adored, in all languages, and perhaps it is for this reason. The essays on Dante and Chaucer are almost equally powerful, though in a sense less awesome. And the brief remarks about the powerful movements of resentment trying to push apart these great pillars of the Western canon, though perspicacious, are melancholy and incidental. Get this book for the great essays on Shakespeare. For lovers of literature, probably nothing more powerful or in an odd way more religious will be written this year. Stuart Whitwell

One of our biggest critical gun fires a characteristically Olympian broadside into the canon debate, no quarter spared for the politically correct. In measures carefully calculated to raise the hackles of would-be canon revisers Bloom (The Book of J, 1990, etc.) assails ``the current disease of moral smugness that is destroying literary study in the name of socio-economic justice.'' He loftily derides the notion that literature either has a social mission or can profitably be discussed in its own social and historical context. For Bloom, literary interest is always a question of artistic merit, which rests on the degree of ``literary individuality and poetic autonomy'' a text achieves. Bloom disclaims any ideology, but his preferred model of literary study--a solitary one--is as unexceptionally conservative as the qualities by which he determines merit. So too is the reading list that emerges from his account of the endless contest between ``strong poets'' and their even stronger precursors (the agonistic principle of ``anxiety of influence'' familiar from Bloom's earlier criticism), the strongest being Shakespeare, whom Bloom adores with unqualified Bardolatry. Doubtless, much of the debate The Western Canon is intended to provoke will rage around the Cultural Literacystyle ``ideal canon'' Bloom sets forth in an appendix (no Behn, Gaskell, or Alice Walker--a favorite target of Bloom's ire--though it does include poet Rita Dove, Toni Morrison, Chinua Achebe, and other geographically and culturally far-ranging writers). Bloom's vast learning and elegant prose don't always save him from tired tirades against the imagined evils of feminist or materialist criticism, nor from repetitiousness: One of the problems of Bloom's approach is that all great writing can end up sounding rather too similar. But even those who disagree fundamentally with Bloom will find him an engaging antagonist. An excellent list of books

A major part of the book reviews specific literature and compares and contrasts it with other works. This is very good reading and helps in selecting books to read. But, in my opinion, the list of literature in Bloom's canon is even more significant. I would not have known that some of the listed works were part of the great literature. And, the list is a good reminder of all that the great literature includes - even if it is Bloom's opinion. Given Bloom's background, I think his opinion as to which literature is the most significant deserves our attention.

A tour of our foundational literature

Love him or hate him (I love him), Harold Bloom is one of the great readers of all time. He has personally read more widely and more deeply than some entire towns. It is certainly not necessary to agree with him to benefit from his insights and analyses. This book examines the notion that there was a body of writing that was central to Western Culture. Each generation read these works and was taught about these works as an essential part of the transmission of that cultural to each rising generation to keep it alive.

It not only enriched the lives of those so educated, it benefited the world because of the great values and life giving force of the rich ideas they contained. He notes how this notion has not only been rejected by recent generations of academics, but is now almost unknown in the living generations of people who would constitute Western Culture if they knew what it actually was.

He opens with an elegy to the Canon. The book is worth reading just for this essay. The next section examines authors of the Aristocratic Age. All Bloom readers know he is a worshipper of Shakespeare (he calls himself a Bardolater). He opens with an essay titled "Shakespeare: Center of the Canon". This section also includes essays on Dante, Chaucer, Cervantes (another Bloom favorite), Montaigne & Moli�re, Milton, Samuel Johnson, and Goethe. An impressive list, no?

The next section is the Democratic Age and includes essay son Wordsworth & Jane Austen, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Dickens, George Eliot, Tolstoy, and Ibsen. The Chaotic age follows and includes Freud vis � vis Shakespeare, Proust, Joyce, Woolf, Kafka, Borges, and Beckett.

Obviously, none of these sections is comprehensive. These are only representative writers of the periods Bloom is discussing with us. The final section is Cataloging the Canon and begins with an Elegiac Conclusion. This essay urges that he is not offering us a lifetime reading plan. Rather, he offers us a way to read. He offers advice on how to immerse yourself in certain kinds of reading. He urges us to seek better writing and to develop a taste that will lead us away that which is not worth reading because it takes you away from that which is. He talks about how to develop the taste of a good Critic rather than spewing the politics of resentment or being numb to the great and good.

Bloom then provides extensive lists of works from each of the three periods. You may like to read some things on the list and not others. As I said, agreeing with Bloom is really not the point. It is being exposed to what is worthwhile in our cultural tradition and getting good grounding in why it is important that is critical. Our emphasis on practical education and vocational training has left most of us with insufficient time in school to indulge our cultural education. We have to do the work more or less on our own. This book can be a real help in making headway in that part of our personal education.

This is the best cardiac book I've ever used as a reference at work. It is so easy to read – I love the larger font size and the writing style. The information is current and presented in such a way that it actually makes sense. I am studying for my cardiac certification, and the test questions at the end of each chapter are extremely helpful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who works with cardiac patients and anyone studying for cardiac certification.

About the Author
William J. Duiker is liberal arts Professor Emeritus of East Asian studies at The Pennsylvania State University. A former U.S. diplomat with service in Taiwan, South Vietnam, and Washington, D.C., he received his doctorate in Far Eastern history from Georgetown University in 1968, where his dissertation dealt with the Chinese educator and reformer Cai Yuanpei. At Penn State, he has written extensively on the history of Vietnam and modern China, including the highly acclaimed COMMUNIST ROAD TO POWER IN VIETNAM (revised edition, Westview Press, 1996), which was selected for a Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award in 1982--1983 and 1996-1997. Other recent books are CHINA AND VIETNAM: THE ROOTS OF CONFLICT (Berkeley, 1987), U.S. CONTAINMENT POLICY AND THE CONFLICT IN INDOCHINA (Stanford, 1995), SACRED WAR: NATIONALISM AND REVOLUTION IN A DIVIDED VIETNAM (McGraw-Hill, 1995), and HO CHI MINH (Hyperion, 2000), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2001. While his research specialization is in the field of nationalism and Asian revolutions, his intellectual interests are considerably more diverse. He has traveled widely and has taught courses on the history of communism and non-Western civilizations at Penn State, where he was awarded a Faculty Scholar Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the spring of 1996. In 2002, the College of Liberal Arts honored him with an Emeritus Distinction Award.

Jackson J. Spielvogel is associate professor Emeritus of history at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as "Moreana," "Journal of General Education," "Catholic Historical Review," "Archiv f�r Reformationsgeschichte," and "American Historical Review." He also has contributed chapters or articles to "The Social History of Reformation," THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, "Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual of Holocaust Studies," and "Utopian Studies." His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (Seventh Edition, 2013). He is the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (Ninth Edition, 2015). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988--1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

Check with your professor before committing to this. Once it ships if you don't need and turn around and send it right back you don't get any reimbursement! Just saying at least partial credit would be nice since I didn't keep the whole 3 months and they can turn around and rent it out again.

Although European unification has progressively divorced the concepts of citizenship and nationhood, this process has met with formidable obstacles. While Balibar seeks a deep understanding of this critical conjuncture, he goes beyond theoretical issues. For example, he examines the emergence, alongside the formal aspects of European citizenship, of a "European apartheid," or the reduplication of external borders in the form of "internal borders" nurtured by dubious notions of national and racial identity. Excellent conceptualization of "Europe"

Balibar provides a lot of food for thought with this book. The first four chapters set up the theoretical framework for his argument, focused primarily around what he terms "European apartheid." I find fascinating his discussion of an apartheid-type exclusion that is being implemented right now not only in the European legislation, but also in the way "Europe" is being constructed as a concept. One of the most interesting ideas discussed in relation to "European apartheid" is probably that of the all-inclusive community. It is difficult to envision a society without borders, yet Balibar at least tries to make us think that it might be possible.

The author raises a variety of other interesting issues, including an original approach to nationalism, citizenship, immigration, even the role of communism in the formation of contemporary Europe, and others. All of this is even more exciting when you realize that he is trying to conceptualize a completely new entity (the EU) that is still in the making. So, what will become of Europe - will it be just a big nation-state, a new type of federation, or something else? Balibar doesn't know, but he certainly makes his readers consider some options.

Warning: this is a serious philosophical book that deals with complex context-specific concepts. If you know nothing about nationalism, exclusion, or the European Union, start elsewhere and come back to Balibar when you are ready for the red pill. The book is also very dense - every word counts, and it takes forever to get through, but it is well worth the struggle.
