The Blood on My Hands: An Autobiography, by Shannon O'Leary

The child of a serial killer, Shannon O'Leary revisits her traumatic past in her memoir,The Blood on My Hands.
Set in 1960s and '70s Australia,The Blood on My Handsis the dramatic tale of Shannon's childhood years, growing upunder the shadow of horrific domestic violence, sexual and physical abuse, and serial murder. Her story is one of courageous resilience in the face of unimaginable horrors.

The responses of those whom Shannon and her immediate family reached out to for help are almost as disturbing as the crimes of her violent father. No one, not even the authorities, would help them.Relatives were afraid to bring disgrace to the family's good name, nuns condemned the child's objections as disobedience and noncompliance, and laws at the time prevented the police from interfering unless someone was killed.

The Blood on My Handsis a heartbreaking--yet riveting--narrative of a childhood spent in pain and terror, betrayed by the people who are supposed to provide safety and understanding. The strength it took for Shannon tonot just survive and escape from her father, but to flourish, heal, and triumph over the trauma she endured as a child is both powerful and moving.

Review
"The Blood on My Hands is a powerful, dark memoir... This is a story that is going to remain in my mind for a long time." - 4 Stars, Readers' Favorite

"The confusion, uncertainty, and sickening foreboding ring true and offer vital insights into the experience of abuse, including the fact that victims had few options, especially in the 1960s."- Kirkus Reviews

"The work is crisp and painfully honest, moving from scene to scene both artfully and factually. Both the mundane and the impossible are treated with equal care, masterfully knitting together the various pieces of O'Leary's tormented past." - 5 Stars,Red City Review

"An amazing story of pure strength and survival. So hard to believe that people can come through this sort of abuse and live to write about it. I hope the author has found some peace in the telling of her story." - 5 Stars,Louise Gilbert

From the Author
"I used pseudonyms in the book order to protect my family. He was never charged despite the police knowing about his activity. The police investigations were case files and are not available to the public. People outside Australia would not be aware that many of the missing person files in NSW in the 1960s and 70s disappeared under one of the governments of the time (there are only about 6 files for the 1960s)," says O'Leary.

About the Author
Shannon O'Leary (a pseudonym) is a prolific writer and performer. She is the author of several poetry books and children's stories, and she has won many song-writing awards. O'Leary has acted and directed on the stage and on Australian national TV, and she runs her own production company.

O'Leary has numerous graduate and post-graduate degrees in education, music, and science. She is a teacher and academic, has five children with her deceased former husband, and lives with her longtime partner in Sydney, Australia.

Mindless horror and it's not fiction!
By Brenda Telford
I have no idea how to review this horrific tale of abuse – the stories author Shannon O’Leary tells are probably just the tip of a very large iceberg, but what she does tell has me blown away by the lack of help; from friends and family, from the nuns (who blamed the children for telling “lies”) and most of all from the police. The fact that the laws of the 1960s and 1970s forbade their “interference” unless the person making the complaint was killed is nothing short of astounding!

Aussie author Shannon O’Leary’s first recollection of contemplating suicide was at age four. Living with her mother, father and two brothers, Michael and Liam near Sydney, Australia, her life was filled with fear. Her father (as was discovered later) had multiple personalities – all the children suffered when the Game Man (or any of the many other personalities) took over. Their mother took her beatings stoically, hoping to spare her children. Shannon bore the rapes in silence, knowing to show fear only fueled his rage. But when he made her watch while he mutilated and killed her pets, then murdered and mutilated young women and people who happened to cross him – Shannon’s retreat into her mind, and the various hiding places around the property only saved her for a short while.

The Blood on my Hands was not a book I enjoyed; because of the content “enjoyment” is not a word that can be used – I contemplated not finishing a couple of times, but kept reading. The courage and resilience of Shannon, her mother and brothers is heartbreaking. The tragedy that was their lives; that it was caused by someone who was supposed to love, care and support his family – and the fact they were solely on their own in the midst of the unimaginable horrors just has me stunned.

Shannon O’Leary is now a successful woman in her own right. Thankfully the laws have changed and domestic violence (though still happening far too often) is in the spotlight. My best wishes for the future go to Shannon – may she continue to be happy and resilient. The Blood on my Hands won’t be for a lot of people – the content is horrific. But I’m glad I read it; it certainly makes you think. Recommended.

Horrific yet uplifting. Highly, highly recommended!
By sarah purdy
Most stories you read about horrific sexual assault, murder, violence and animal cruelty are works of fiction, the darkest things minds can think of when writing a book to scare and disturb readers, some are true, wholly, unflinchingly and disturbingly true. This is one of them.

How could anyone survive the brutality that this author went through? How can anyone not curl up into their mind and stay there?

For her to have witnessed her father do the unimaginable things he did and not only become successful and education but to raise a family and be a healthy well-adjusted woman.

It proves that no matter what you face in life, no matter how horrific your beginnings, you are stronger than all who try to drag you down and with the love and support of the rest of your family and your friends you will become even stronger and use the foundation of your past to build a better future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite the subject matter and hope it manages to help at least one child know that it gets better, life gets better.

*Huge thanks to Shannon O'Leary, Book Publicity Services and NetGalley for this copy in exchange for an honest review*

The Wounds, Physical and Psychological Were Open, Raw and Bleed onto the Pages
By Carol @readingwritingandriesling
My View:
A particularly horrific and grim story of ongoing domestic violence and psychosis that is not addressed in the perpetrator’s lifetime – this is a uncomfortable book to read - imagine what it must have been like to endure? And endure Shannon O’Leary and her family did – the depravity here is unbelievable - if the author hadn’t qualified the read with “autobiography” you would think this was macabre crime fiction.
To enjoy or not to enjoy? No I can’t say I enjoyed this read – the wounds, physical and psychological were open, raw and bleed onto the pages – I could not enjoy. Compelling – yes. An incredible story of courage and survival – yes. Can we learn from the mistakes made here? I think this should be read by all in the agencies working in the field of domestic violence and community health; more education and resources are needed in these areas.

Shannon O’Leary - you must be one amazingly strong woman. Whenever I think life is tough for me, I will recall what you have endured.

'Frighteningly vivid, a most strongly felt piece of writing.' IRISH TIMES

After months of fighting a savage war on the Eastern Front, the 27th Penal Regiment - men considered little more than criminals - are joined by German reserves.

A garrison has been attacked and occupied by Russian troops. The German soldiers have been slaughtered. Sven Hassel and his comrades are ordered to get behind Russian lines and massacre those responsible.

But this is only the beginning... Because then the orders change: the regiment are sent to Hamburg, where their next assignment is guard duty for the mercilessly cruel Gestapo...

Review
Hassel's books of war are the most powerful I have ever read

In essence this is an expose of the absurdity of war, and a moving plea for peace. As such, it takes its rank with far milder books, such as ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT―NEWSDAY

He is graphic, at times brilliantly so, but never brutal or bitter. He is, too, a first-rate storyteller―WASHINGTON POST

About the Author
Born in 1917 in Fredensborg, Denmark, Sven Hassel joined the merchant navy at the age of 14. He did his compulsory year's military service in the Danish forces in 1936 and then, facing unemployment, joined the German army. He served throughout the Second World War on all fronts except North Africa. When the war ended in 1945 he was transferred between Russian, American and French prison camps, and upon returning to Denmark, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for treason. He began writing LEGION OF THE DAMNED during his time as a prisoner of war. His 14 Second World War books, which draw on his own encounters and experiences as a soldier, have sold over 53 million copies worldwide and have been published in more than 50 countries. He peacefully passed away in Barcelona in 2012, where he had resided since 1964.

Well told, insightful, real
By Bobby1
This is one of the better Sven Hassel books, I got it on the Kindle. Most of the action takes place in Hamburg, and for anyone who knows Hamburg, will be able to recognise lovely places like Landungsbrucken, Fuhlsbuttel, Alster, as well as more seedy spots like the Reeperbahn and Herbertstrasse. The usual suspects, ie Tiny, The Old Man, Legionnaire, Barcelona, Porta and Sven himself have themselves a bit of time off, while the main plot evolves around The Gestapo at work, with ruthless, no holds barred, make it up as you go along rules, enforced brutally to show the prisoners who's boss, regardless of whether they're fair or not. The motley crew go about gazumping the most unruly elements of the Gestapo with a view to catching up with them, and meting out their own form of justice.
Assignment Gestapo is a direct prelude to Monte Cassino, which takes me to my next stop. It is about the only time when one of Sven's books has a natural sequel to it, I'm hoping that Monte Cassino lives up to Assignment Gestapo, which shows what Sven and co gets up to away from the rough and tumble of warfare. Highly recommended!

Still a good read!
By Amazon Customer
I read all of the Sven Hassel books way back in the early 80's. I thought I would revisit them, as they are available as digital versions. They are still a good, if a little lightweight, read - even after all these years,

Easy to read and get through reasonably quickly (I think my reading ability has vastly improved and sped up since I was 19 or 20 years old).

I wouldn't take the entire story at face value, I would say that after the first book or two in the series that the author has taken some artistic license with the internal details and absolute historians would quibble over some of the scenarios.

Don't let that put you off though; they are a great snapshot of the terrible time the world found itself in WW2, as well as an insight into the brutality of war and the obscene regime of the Nazi's.

The book and the series would suit young men 18 years and over. The style and format lends itself well to start those who are not readers off and, hopefully, develop a thirst for more, and more complex, reads.

The Art of Fact: Contemporary Artists of Nonfiction, by Barbara Lounsberry

The artistry of nonfiction is the great unexplored territory of contemporary criticism. Although the American book clubs now emphasize nonfiction and The New York Times Book Review publishes almost three times as many reviews of nonfiction as fiction, critical appreciation of this work has lagged behind. The Art of Fact is the first comprehensive examination of five of today's most popular and important nonfiction artists: Gay Talese, Tom Wolfe, John McPhee, Joan Didion, and Norman Mailer. By discussing contemporary literary nonfiction in relation to the early prose narrative forms and to the news/novels of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the opening chapter defines the discourse known as literary or artistic nonfiction. Dr. Lounsberry then describes four characteristics of literary nonfiction and grounds these characteristics in contemporary works.

The five chapters which follow this introduction thoroughly examine the works of five prominent, contemporary nonfiction artists. While critics to date have tended to focus on only one or two of each writer's works, these chapters trace themes across each writer's entire body of work and even project likely future directions, given current artistic trajectories. Also addressed is the role of literary nonfiction in the American literary tradition and how each of the five writers exemplifies a strand of nonfiction narrative. The Art of Fact draws from personal interviews with Gay Talese and John McPhee and includes new interpretations of the works of Tom Wolfe, Joan Didion and Norman Mailer as well as unpublished material from Gay Talese's current book-in-progress. The Art of Fact is a timely call for critical appreciation of the artistry of nonfiction and offers valuable insights to both students and fans of contemporary nonfiction.

Would like to see a page of the music in the sample before I buy.

I downloaded the Kindle sample to take a look and see if it was within my skill set, but it only shows the cover and title page. There's no actual music in the sample. How can I look at it to see if it's something I'm capable of playing?

Uncle CharlieFrom Contrasto

Uncle Charlie was my favorite uncle. He’s my godfather. My grandfather was a grade-A hood, hustling, pimping women, abusive. My mother got out, but Uncle Charlie never did. My mother made sure I had an education. I went to art school. In 1981, I started realizing that my uncle was an interesting person to take pictures of, and it became my family album. Charlie is fifty-one years old now and his life is a mess. He blames his kids, he blames his ex-wife, he blames my mother—he thinks he is the ultimate victim. I know enough about his life to know how he got there, but emotionally I can’t cut him any slack. I know it’s because he had an abusive childhood, but that doesn’t give you the right to fuck up your kids. Still, you know, I feel for him. He’ll always be my Uncle Charlie.

Marc Asnin has been photographing his Uncle Charlie for eleven years. Charlie and his five children (Charles, Joe, Brian, Mary, and Jamie) lived together in Bushwick, Brooklyn. This is the story of his tattos, his guns, his uneployment, his illness, his poverty, and his drug problems.

Marc Asnin is based in New York City and has been photographing for twenty years. He developed a curiosity for photography as a child growing up in Brooklyn, inspired by his father, an advertising photographer. Marc’s resume is extensive. His various awards include the W. Eugene Smith Grant, the Mother Jones Documentary Award, and the Alicia Patterson Fellowship. He has also taught at institutions such as the International Center of Photography and the School of Visual Arts.

If you want to be moved to FEEL, buy this book.
By Kerry Payne
As a photographer, I have long admired people who turn personal life experiences into a body of work that will move others to pause and FEEL, in a world that sometimes moves so fast we forget to do so. Marc Asnin's 'Uncle Charlie' is such a book. Personal, deep, confronting, at times shocking and all the while sweet/bittersweet and poignant. A sensitive testimony to the complexity of family ties, of right and wrong, of strength and frailty, this book at times moved me to tears, repulsed me, filled me with respect and inspired me. Both visual and literary, Uncle Charlie is a deeply personal and beautifully documented story and one that I am glad to have grace my bookshelf with many other photographic works that have stood the test of time.

The Salmon Who Dared to Leap Higher, by Ahn Do-hyun

The life of the salmon is a predictable one: swimming upstream to the place of its birth to spawn, and then to die.
This is the story of a salmon whose silver scales mark him out as different - who dares to leap beyond his fate. It's a story about growing up, and about aching and ardent love. For swimming upstream means pursuing something the salmon cannot see: a dream.
Translated for the first time into English, The Salmon Who Dared To Leap Higher is a wise, tender and inspiring modern fable about finding freedom and a harmony with nature we have either forgotten or lost in the binding realities of life.

3.5 stars. A lovely heartwarming story but leaves you with mixed feelings at the end plus not the best translation.
By thehappymeerkat
I found this book in my local library and was intrigued by the book blurb.

During their return to their spawning grounds one salmon, named Silver Salmon, stands out. Not only are his scales a silver colour, marking him out from the rest of the other salmon, but he also has a curious mind, a mind that wonders what the meaning of life is. This is a poignant and thought provoking story told from the point of view of a salmon.

The Salmon Who Dared to Leap Higher is a short book and quite easy to read. The author is a Korean poet and this book is the first translation into English which might explain a problem I had reading it. The book begins with the author explaining the reason behind writing the story 'the only way to truly understand salmon is to see the world through their eyes'. But this is more than just a simple book about salmon returning to their spawning ground and the journey there, the main character Silver Salmon constantly questions the meaning of life and many of his questions and musings make you question human life.

The story is a beautiful one but it was hard to really enjoy the book due to what I can only assume was a problem with translation. The book switches between present and past tense but this is done very randomly and with no meaning to it. To me reading in this way just confused the plot and took away some of the enjoyment. This was especially annoying during the really deep and more poignant moments of the tale. Despite this movement of tense though the story is still a good read especially in the second half.

Along the journey the salmon speak with each other as well as with the river and other beings. This can seem strange but some of the conversations are quite profound. Not only do you learn more about salmon and their journey but the whole story can actually make you wonder about the purpose of all things in nature, it's this part of the book that really got to me and I really enjoyed. However, despite all this, parts of the book seem almost silly such as the name of one of the salmon 'Bag-of-Bones Salmon', again perhaps wrongfully translated but it did make certain scenes in the story less serious for me.

The book has some lovely illustrations making it easier to read and it feels more like a book for children or one to read with children rather than aimed at adults. The story is heart warming but also sad and I have mixed feelings at the end of reading it. Apart from the translation problems, which take away some enjoyment, I find the story of Silver Salmon and his views on life at the end a little sad. While this is a great book for teaching us about nature and the meaning and purpose to life, it isn't a book to instill dreams and hopes. It's for this mixed response at the end that I give it a 3.5 stars, I liked it but not as much as I had hoped.

Thumbs up for book two!
By John M. Vizcarra
Golden Son continues the story of Darrow, a deep-undercover agent of the low-caste Reds, who is uniquely positioned among the high-caste Golds, and is trying to sow discord in an effort to restructure the society that keeps his people as slaves. It's the second book in the Red Rising trilogy, and is as exciting as the first.

The series strikes at the fundamental core of our American independence - free will. Many stories have been told of dystopic societies that paint a worrisome future for us if we "continue down the path we're on." Most of them have oppressive regimes that all feel they are doing what is necessary to keep the peace. Look to Star Wars and The Hunger Games, to name just a few. These stories take our fundamental desire for free will and suppress it in a structure that appeals to the reader on a visceral level.

Brown does a remarkable job of playing with the reader's emotions, to the point where one takes personal offense at the content of the story. This draws the reader in and attaches themselves to the fate of the characters, willing the characters to make the right choices and make the same decisions the reader would make. You're all but cheering along with the victories, and weeping with the tragedies.

The world Brown has built is rich and expansive. Not just the planetary scale of characters, but the depth with which the society has been carefully constructed to serve the story and reflect history. There's enough for everyone to relate to from a historical perspective, and yet it's easy to become lost in the overwhelming "now" of the narrative.

Golden Son is as amazing as Red Rising; the story is relentless and engaging, if not a bit predictable. Just a bit, though. There are patterns that must be followed of course, but you'll still enjoy the ride the entire time.

if you like the first one you should like this one
By Amazon Customer
Overview: Begins ~1-2 years following the events in Red Rising. Darrow continues trying to establish his presence in society and gain notoriety/power. But the Son's of Ares and Cassius's brood are stirring in the background... how long can the pressure build before the pot explodes?

+ Continues the overarching themes and ideas from the first book. Generally speaking, if you like the first one you should like this one. The book has enough negatives that it should be 3stars... but it reads sooo good that I cant do it.

+/- Slightly more political then the first book.

- The main issue in the book is the time-lapse. It is handled extremely poorly. It almost seems like I missed a 1.5 novel. Darrow has established relationships with other people, gained new friends, and somehow ended his relationship with Mustang by the time we catch back up with him. Not to mention he has under gone a ton of training and other trials---- some of which are not even brought up until the end of the book.
- By the end of the book characters have started become repetitive. We see the same character cycle with at least 3 characters in a row.
- This book has missing plot elements- minor plot spoiler (I try to be vague): [There is a point in the book where the protagonists are trying to martial forces because they don't have enough. But it backfires and they lose a bunch instead. But then they are able to carry out the plan with less forces...even though they couldn't before. 3-1=5. Apparently.

I read this as quickly as I read the first one!
By Sneaky Burrito
I read Red Rising in a matter of a few days and it was the same with Golden Son (which I picked up *immediately* after Red Rising).

A lot of the things I liked about Red Rising were present in Golden Son, as well. The raw emotion we saw in the first 20% of so of book one were here, too, although it was a little more spaced out and there wasn't quite as much of it. But every time I was becoming a little less invested in the story, there'd be one of those moments where Darrow (the POV character, if you haven't read book one) would remember why he was doing what he was doing, what he was fighting for, something about his past, etc., and I'd be pulled right back in.

I think characterization is a little uneven here, but that's the nature of any first-person POV book. Darrow is complex and intelligent and doesn't ever forget where he came from. However, he has conflicting emotions and he is most definitely NOT infallible. And he's walking a tight line -- he needs the support of his high-status (Gold) patron, but his own feelings tend towards "demokratic" (to use the spelling from the book). There are some revelations about certain characters in the book that almost make me want to go back and read Red Rising again with this additional knowledge, to see if there were subtle clues in their behavior that pointed towards future events.

One thing this book has going for it is that the villains who play main roles in the story are not one-dimensional. And you don't always know they're villains, until it's too late. Trust is a big issue here -- Darrow wants to trust people but sometimes chooses the wrong allies, sometimes shuts out people he shouldn't. But he also makes some decisions to trust people, especially people with lower social status (lets a Blue captain his ship, lets an Orange give him advice with respect to throwing off enemies, gives a Stained man a weapon traditionally used only by the nobility) that I think will be important in book three. (If you haven't read book one, various social classes have colors and pretty much everything they are allowed to do or not do is dictated by what color a person is born into. Darrow was born a Red -- a low working class -- but has been altered to appear a Gold, the ruling class.)

The weak point, I think, is that this is a very similar book to Red Rising. What was carried out on the ground with castles, among students, was transferred to ships in space. The same rivalries and many of the same characters were back. (On the plus side, the same narrative structure of defeat followed by victory followed by defeat was in place, and that really worked. Pierce Brown doesn't really ever take EVERYTHING away from his heroes, even when things are looking pretty grim. There's always some way out. I hate reading about defeats for characters I've come to care about, but I know that if I get through them, some triumph -- even a small one -- is sure to come soon. So even though the book did not end on a happy note for me -- and it was somewhat of a cliffhanger, for people who hate such things -- I have hopes for the outcome after volume three, and wish I didn't have to wait for it!)

This series is shaping up to be a rather typical hero's journey, I think. It has a fair amount in common (overall structure wise, though not with respect to individual events) with the original Star Wars trilogy. I sometimes get bored with such stories, but the writing style (present tense, too, which usually bothers me but I don't even notice it here), the emotion, the action, and the ups and downs really all worked together to keep me interested.

I would not start the series with this book. Not only will you learn so much more about the characters, the world of the story, etc., when you read about them in book one, but Red Rising is really an entertaining book in its own right and you won't want to miss out on that.

Psychology, by Daniel L. Schacter, Daniel T. Gilbert, Daniel M. Wegner, Matthew K. Nock

Students rarely look at a psychology textbook after leaving college, but they will continue to encounter psychology throughout their lives. With that in mind, renowned authors and researchers Schacter, Gilbert, Wegner, and now Matthew Nock introduce students to today's research with a focus on the critical thinking skills that will stay with them beyond the course term. Quirky examples of thinking gone awry, and scenarios based on common psychological misconceptions are just some of the tools the authors use to get students to question what they think they know about psychological science.

Great book!
By GmaKiya
This is a great book and I love that I can rent it for college courses without paying hundreds for books. The book itself was in good condition with the exception of the corners. All the color is off and you can see the grey on just the corners. The book itself is really interesting and I am so glad I took the class that I can learn so many things from this book!

Written for the Accidental Salespeson
By Sam
For many people with technical backgrounds, sales and selling are synonymous with distasteful and disdain. Yet when the product inventor becomes the boss (of their own company with one employee or a large company of thousands), he or she is suddenly thrust into a world that is unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Yet it is a world that is obviously necessary for personal and business success.

Like most of us when we're put in stressful situations, we fall back on what makes us most comfortable. And for technical people, that can often be using jargon, buzz words, and language that makes sense with like-minded (and typically more intelligent) individuals. However unfortunately, in the sales world, nothing can turn off a potential customer faster than using words and concepts that the buyer doesn't understand.

Babette Ten Haken provides technical people, and really anyone who sells for a living, a guidebook on how to explain a product, its benefits, and its value in ways that are easily understood and comfortable for both the buyer to hear, and the salesperson to sell. In reality, almost everyone in business is a salesperson whether the title "sales" is on a business card or not. From the receptionist to the product manager to the CEO, almost everyone in a company comes in contact with a prospect sometime during the day. What Babette shows is a simple methodology that anyone can follow to make selling comfortable, and even fun.

Another important point that Babette's book covers in detail is that selling does not necessarily mean only to the outside world. Every day, the technical person needs to sell his or her concepts internally within a company. Thus Babette's strategies and tactics will help the technically-minded/mathematically-oriented person overcome fears and she provides a roadmap for sales success.

What I also enjoy is Babette's style and manner. She writes for the technical person in a non-technical, easy-to-understand and easy-to-read manner. Read "Do YOU Mean Business" and YOU TOO will get results.

A Business Book, Not just Another Sales Book
By Robert Terson
"Do YOU Mean Business?: Technical/Non-Technical Collaboration, Business Development and YOU" isn't just another sales book. It's a business book, for everyone in your organization. Babette sees business development as part of everyone's job description. She believes everyone needs to understand how their job function affects the colleagues they hand their work over to. It's like a 4x100 meter relay race--the individual running one leg of the race has to smoothly hand that baton off to the next runner, who'd better be in position with her hand extended to receive that baton and sprint off.

"Do YOU Mean Business?" is about everyone in the organization getting to the finish line together. It's about technical folks learning how to talk business, and sales and marketing folks learning how to talk about the technical aspects of the project. It's about finding out what the common denominators are, so that you can leave the techie lingo or sales spiel at home.

At a time when we're all pondering how to develop business, Babette Ten Haken has given us a book that pulls it all together. Business development is dynamic and collaborative; no more "us versus them."

I know you'll enjoy reading her book and putting her suggestions into action. More importantly, this book will make you money. Buy your copy now!

Everyone is a Business
By Conrad
"Do you mean Business?" If studying management, business/industrial pyschology and/or business communications this is a good book to have, for it will provide context and examples for the abstract theory you are studying. If studying science or engineering then the book will provide insight into how the organisations you will work for actually work. If already employed then no matter what your job role the book will be useful.

Modern enterprises rather than being systems specifically designed to fullfill a function have instead evolved to being random collections of occupational groups. If the business enterprise just considered as a machine, then you are just a cog with in that machine: and can be replaced by any other such cog. But if the enterprise is considered to be a higher form of life (refer James Lovelocks definition of life), then you as an individual breathe life into the enterprise. The enterprise can become an extension of self and provide security well into the future. A business enterprise can be considered a tribal society unhindered geographical boundaries, it can operate as a village providing food, clothing and shelter for its members.

But it cannot be so, if it operates as a battle ground for waring individuals, with battle lines drawn between occupational groups, between owners and employees, and customers and the enterprise. With everything always being somebodies elses responsibility: not my job. All are in the same boat, and if the ship sinks then all go down.

In a typical silo'd enterprise, sales sells that which engineering cannot design and production cannot make. Customers are dissatisfied because product doesn't live up to expectations. Sales look bad because they cannot deliver on false promises, and engineering looks bad because they cannot design product to meet the needs of the market. Common to all these situations are poor timing and poor communications. Turf protection, creates these silo's, creates refined language, and raises barriers to sharing and communication, it hinders team work, and it jeopardises future security for everyone.

"Do you mean business", places the responsibility for the success or failure of the enterprise, and the individual, squarely on the shoulders of the individual, on your shoulders. But you are not left burdened with such responsibility, for "Do you mean Business?", provides you with the tools and a set off exercises to tackle the task before you.

If you have studied business then maybe you could work it all out for yourself, as you bump into the issues and relate it back to the abstract theories. But why do that, when here its mapped out before you, and you can hit the ground running.

Clearly there is a problem in an organisation, when the drive of the hungry sales people can be explained by something as trivial as Maslows hierarchy of needs, but the motivation of the engineers needs Vroom's expectancy/Valency theory to explain. The sales people need to be motivated not hungry, and the engineers motivation needs aligning with the needs of the business.

There is not just a disconnect relating to communications between sales, designers, production and customer, there is a disconnect between the business model, business plan and the needs of the customer. However, if the communications are poor then the business model cannot be aligned with meeting the needs of the customers. The most important part of those communications is listening, and when you open your mouth it should be to aid understanding, to inform and educate, not to show off expertise (which is typically built around deliberately causing confusion).

In an A-team everyone has a common set of core skills, everyone can act as commander/leader, but each is equal and unique at the same time. We live in society and are supplied by and work in a market driven economy, everyone needs to understand management, people, politics, organisational behaviour, business and markets. Employees in organisations do not have a common set of core skills, they do tend towards being cogs manufactured for a specific purpose by a factory school system, and are largely self limiting, and expendable.

Better than a 59 second employee which reinforces the them and us conflict, "Do you mean business" puts the focus on developing and understanding self, improving communication skills, and from there developing a more collaborative organisation both internally with fellow employees and externally with the customer.

"Do you mean business" is the book with the common core skills to Adopt, Apply and Adapt. (sorry I changed the sequence, read the book to find the difference.)
