A cracking good read

George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) is largely forgotten today, but prior to World War II he had many young fans of his adventure books. Muscular fiction at its exciting best, Henty’s stories follow a brave and upright young man through a series of adventures during great historical happenings (usually great happenings of British history). This book is a collection of five of Henty’s short stories, ranging the world from India to China to the wilds of the California Gold Rush. Exciting stories from another era, this book is a cracking good read. I highly recommend it to you!

Bears and Dacoits – When his young niece disparages the size of the bears of India, Colonel Hastings spins out a tale of one of his hunting expeditions. It seems that not only are the bears dangerous, but so are the brigands who haunt the same hills.

The Paternosters – Young Tom Virtue is proud of his yacht, and when a storm begins to brew, he puts his passengers aboard a steamer and sets out to weather the storm at sea. But, there is an adventure heading towards all of them.

A Pipe of Mystery – When the children ask the old Colonel for a ghost story, he instead tells them a story of second sight. It seems that in rescuing a fakir, the Colonel was given a view of the future, one of mutinying sepoys...

White-Faced Dick – It’s 1849, and the Gold Rush is on. But among all of the tough and pitiless man there walks a boy with a heart of gold, White-faced Dick.

A Brush With The Chinese – With Britain at War with the Chinese, H.M.S Perseus is looking for pirates. Thought it was alright. Certainly better books out there to be reading. I would have prefered a little more daring, and danger, than what was provided.

A Masterpiece

Read as a student assignment the book would be, and often is, a torment for most students. It is quite simply a difficult read: chronology modulates with only the vaguest hint, the read is not a “story”, at least not in the conventional sense. The reader ‘absorbs’ the story-line through inference and innuendo and occasionally extrapolation. The characters are veiled, shadowy and obscure. "Caddy smells like trees": the 'thoughts' of the mentally diminished Benjy - ring throughout the read, subtly 'whispering' part of the plot.

There are two turning points: 1st the one that the reader passes when she or he decides to continue the read despite the instinct to quit, and the 2nd (for me about halfway through the book) when there is the realization of the utter brilliance of the author for his bold method and subtle presentation and his intricate linking of the characters.

It is about good and selfish, and honest and deceitful, and tradition and loyalty in Faulkner’s South back in the 1920’s. And if that is a very odd description of a “plot” - and it is - it is because traditional plot and story-line are very unorthodox in this brilliant novel.

Brilliant!

A hard look into one of the most dysfunctional families in all of literature by one of America's greatest authors. This is the story of the once-prominent Compson family of Mississippi and its final generation of incapable and neurotic men: the mentally retarded Benjy, the self-righteous college student Quentin, and the curmudgeon Jason. While they lead incredibly different lives, these three have one common obsession, their sister Caddy, each for different reasons. Faulkner probes deep into the psyches of these extremely troubled and stultified men to reveal the unfortunate fate of the American South and a picture of human nature at its most pathetic.

The reader should be warned, however, that while incredibly rewarding, this novel requires the reader to read between the lines in order to understand important plot points and to use clues from the second two chapters in order to understand the first two. The first two chapters (narrated by Benjy and Quentin) are incredibly psychological and occasionally sad, while the last two are objective and often entertaining, the action centering on the bitter tension between the cantankerous Jason and his mischievous niece Quentin. In fact, there is rarely a dull moment in the novel, little in the way of arcane thought and much in the way of chaos. Overall, masterfully done!

If you're into dark humor, look no further

As an English-lit major, this was my first introduction to a Faulkner novel. The stream-of-consciousness narrative told by a large number of characters is fairly easy to get used to. Especially with a chapter that consists of four words: "my mother is a fish."
So for anyone wanting to dip their toes into some of the most challenging and greatest books in the English language, I'd suggest reading this one before tackling "The Sound and the Fury" and "Absalom Absalom" (in that order). "Dying" would be a great introduction to the style that is put on steroids in the latter books.
And the idea of a dysfunctional family that would make Joe Jackson and his progeny seem normal and the Honey Boo Boo brood seem sophisticated trying to haul their dead matriarch's corpse the 40 miles to her hometown -- in a mule-drawn wagon -- for burial with her family while dealing with a flood that takes out all the bridges and a growing contingent of buzzards is some great dark humor.

India in the Shadows of Empire explains the postcolonial Indian polity by presenting an alternative historical narrative of the British Empire in India and India's struggle for independence. It pursues this narrative along two major trajectories. On the one hand, it focuses on the role of imperial judicial institutions and practices in the making of both the British Empire and the anti-colonial movement under the Congress, with the lawyer as political leader. On the other hand, it offers a novel interpretation of Gandhi's non-violent resistance movement as being different from the Congress. It shows that the Gandhian movement, as the most powerful force largely responsible for India's independence, was anchored not in western discourses of political and legislative freedom but rather in Indic traditions of renunciative freedom, with the renouncer as leader.

This volume offers a comprehensive and new reinterpretation of the Indian Constitution in the light of this historical narrative. India in the Shadows of Empire contends that the British colonial idea of justice and the Gandhian ethos of resistance have been the two competing and conflicting driving forces that have determined the nature and evolution of the Indian polity after independence.

Ambitious, original, and thought-provoking, this book will be indispensable for students and scholars of Indian history, the British Empire, legal-constitutional history, political science, and sociology. Enjoyable read, with glimmers of genius hiding throughout

First, a word of warning to potential readers...This book is NOT politically correct. If you are easily offended then don't read this. But if you are tired of overly PC books and enjoy some slightly warped humor (kind of at a high-school boy level, but with occasional humor with deep insight), there is a good chance you will enjoy this.

Some of the high points: Imagine a Marine drill instructor training recruits on an overly PC world. This alone was worth the purchase price of the book.

I also enjoyed lines like "All they needed was the right mix of thrust, luck, and a complete disregard for physics." This is usually an important part of any science fiction, but it was refreshing to see it acknowledged out loud.

Many of the kinks from the first few books are finally getting worked through, and the stage is finally set for several interesting possible stories. I look forward to future efforts. Characters are becoming more complex, and the plot had a few surprises.

Enjoy! (unless you are part of the PC police, in which case I say Ignore!

Platoon F for Fantastic!

This book is absolutely fantastic! If I didn't have to work then I wouldn't have been able to put it down! I have only recently started reading John P. Logsdon books and he is now in my top 3 authors.

I have loved all of the Platoon F series. These books may be shorter than most, but they deliver a great, full story in each book. Warped Conduit has just the right mix of humour, action and "complete disregard for the laws of physics" that make it really stand out.

I cannot wait to see what happens to the crew over their next few adventures, and I really want my own Geezer!

You will not be disappointed with this book, unless you have no sense of humour or are so politically correct that you are unable to leave the house for fear of offending someone.

Enjoyed this. Light-hearted and entertaining

I was given a copy of this for an honest review and I ended up being very pleased with this. It was a fun read and in places I just had to laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of the situations in which these characters found themselves. No, this is not a serious read, but it is an entertaining one. The book pokes gentle fun at a number of classics in the genre of sci fi and does not take itself too seriously. I had a lot of fun reading it. True, some of the humor is coarse but I didn't find that it detracted from the overall story at all. I found this a welcome antidote to books I have read lately which seem overly impressed with their own importance. I think that if you enjoy Robert Asprin, you'll find this fun, too. With summer upon us, this would make a great beach read.

A Compelling Read....

This book is a must read...especially for those who have read Stephen's preceding books ( they do need to be read in order as written). The psychedelic experiences guided by shamans as presented in Fractal Key are events that take one through spiritual rebirths. Stephen gives excellent examples of this through out this book. I loved all the geographical descriptions of Mexico and the comradery of these two men. I especially loved this quote from the book..."The long way of expunging Karma is through multiple incarnations with varied roles and scripts. The short way is through Forgiveness"....which we all need to do more of! Another great book...way to go Stephen...

A very interesting read. I especially loved the brotherly kinship and how the two main characters were brought together in this tale which weaves so much clarity and information about the shamanic relationships with the teacher plants and the great respect and honoring necessary to journey to awakening in this way. I feel it is a much needed book at this time when so many yearn for these experiences but are not necessarily guided in the right way. As ever it is light and fun and a pleasure to read and absorb while the words unlock pathways within.

Firsthand account of the development of a vital technology

This is a very unique book. Very straight forward, fascinating read. He relates mainly the business, legal, political and engineering side of this crash program of WWII conducted on a scale as large as the Manhattan Project, and was just as important. His story is fully supported with documentation and data. He also relates small details, such as the octane levels of commercial gasoline in the 20's, tire wear and cost, etc., that is hard to find in ordinary sources. He doesn't get to bogged down in chemistry, using the word "hand" instead of "bond" -- Howard was a chemical engineer in the age just before the concept of unit operations, and his account shows that struggle.

Fantastic book on how to protect your computer from viruses, hacking and much much more. Packed with a ton of useful and practical information so you never have to worry about your computer again. I found the book easy to read and very helpful in understanding anti-virus software, and how to use VPN and other internet tools. Also goes into detail on social networking sites and email accounts. Very good info! Highly recommended!
