Arrived on time, but it got stuck in the mail box (which wasn't Amazon`s fault) which made it a late Christmas gift. Wasn't the type of book I thought it was, but my niece still loved it and she's 4!

Wonderful story and illustrations

I purchased this book in Dutch when I was visiting Holland a few weeks ago. I always purchase a childrens' book for a little friend of mine when I travel overseas. Sometimes I'm able to find something in the native language with an English translation. Or, I buy the native language version and get some help with a translation. I spent quite a while looking through the childrens' section in an Amsterdam bookstore and fell in love with the story (which I thought I understood in spite of my lack of understanding of Dutch) and the illustrations. I got some help translating the book and will be curious to see how close my version comes to the published one! The illustrations are wonderful. I think they will appeal to 2-5 year-olds and also to the adults reading to them. There are some wonderful little details in them.

Some times you just have to say it...........

This book is wonderful! The pictures are great and the story is lovely.
My 7 year old refers to Lola as the little girl whose cheeks keep getting biggger until the words just have to come out.
The book only takes about 5 minutes to read but the message will last a life time. It tells children, and parents, how important it is that we tell the people we love, "I love you, I love you, I love you so much!"
This would be a great book for new parents to begin reading to their bundle of joy right from the start.
A favorite in our home and is sure to be one in your home too.

Love the Book now - it's a life saver (hated it at first)

Right now I consider this the very most valuable raw food book I've ever read. When I first read this book I thought, "This author is an idiot! Doesn't he know that nature created raw food and all raw food is good! Cooked food is poison...." I am six months into the raw food lifestyle, and in the beginning I hit it with religious enthusiasm, and religious ignorance (unknowing to me). This book opened me up to the idea that I need to be a little more practical in my approach to raw foods. According to the author, the ideal raw food diet is high in fruit sugar and greens, and low in fat (even raw fat). Yes, I am now a believer in this system. Based on the author's recommended style of eating I have been able to start running again because I have enough calories now. I am getting stronger and I have more energy because I have enough calories from the right source - fruit sugar (not raw fat). I needed this book to show me the light. I want to be stronger and have energy. Before reading this book I was not getting enough calories in my diet, and I was eating too much raw fat. I didn't have energy, and I stopped working out. Also, I lost 35 pounds (which was welcomed, but I didn't like not having energy). So, I'm ready to get my energy back. I do eat some vegan cooked foods at dinner as described in the book. It's about getting enough calories for me now.

Please let me quickly mention that I hated this book in the beginning. First, you get to read about the author's life. I didn't like that at first (I love it now). Then, finally towards the second half of the book you get some real meaty information (hahahah - meaty). I am a black-and-white thinker, and I disagreed with the author's conclusions in the second half of the book. To me, life is either all good or all bad, and this was my mistake. I had approached the raw food diet like a religion where my dogma kept me closed-off to new ideas. Basically, it made me ignorant. I put the book down for a few days because I didn't agree with anything the author wrote - I even wanted a refund. Then, I realized that this guy has been living a raw food lifestyle for 20 years. I have only been doing it for 6 months. And, he has a very practical outlook with balance and reason. My outlook was pure black-and-white dogma. I now have energy, and I have been running strong for the first time in four months.

P.S. I just read my own review and I see in the opening sentence that I said this is "the very most valuable raw food book I've ever read." Hahah! that's what I mean about black-and-white. I do that.

Fascinating read for newbies and seasoned rawbies alike

I've been on a mostly raw-food diet for going on 15 years now, and I didn't think there was much I didn't know about it. But there were some surprises in Fred Patenaude's latest book, "Raw Food Controversies."

Most raw-food books on the market today, even the newest ones, insist on treading old ground and cite why raw food should form the backbone of human diets and that you don't have to sacrifice flavor for maxinmum nutrition. But Fred, in telling his story of how he managed to become sick even on what was supposed to be the world's optimal diet, has some important lessons for all of us who think it doesn't matter what you put into your mouth just as long as it's raw.

Fred's story contains much new information that's worth tuning into on that topic and also the subject of dental health.

Whether you agree or not with his conclusions, it's crucial for the raw food community to start honing in on more sophisticated information than merely "cooked food is death." Because there are so many controversies out there, such as if 100% or 90% or 75% raw is optimal, how good dental health may be achieved and why raw foodists don't achieve the longest life spans, the raw food community needs to begin raising these issues seriously. There's a dire need for more useful information about this diet. Fred has begun to address some of them in earnest.

People are interesting. Memoirs about people are interesting. But to be able to read a personal story on a topic I have such a great interest in was a true pleasure!

Frederic Patenaude is one of the premiere health authors in the raw food world. His experience, clear communication and pleasant writing style make this book a MUST-READ for anyone ever involved in the raw/vegan lifestyle.

When I began my raw food journey, everything seemed so simple. Just eat raw! More nutrients! Enzymes! Superfoods! 100%, and it'll all be great, right?

Not so fast, young Jedi. The raw food diet is a powerful tool, but with great power comes great responsibility. If done improperly, health decline ensues. If done right, however, it can be a great addition to your lifestyle design.

Val Andrews is an entertaining writer

I've read a lot of Sherlock Holmes pastiches and I have to say I like Val Andrews the best. You have to be familiar with Doyle's characters because Andrews assumes knowledge of them, but he sticks with the characters that Doyle created and I like that. The stories are not overly complicated either. I also like the detail he gives on the history of magic which is of interest to me. His stories are entertaining and the Houdini birthright was no exception.

Val Andrews writes a good Sherlock Holmes pastiche, often combining it with other items of interest.
In Sherlock Holmes and the Houdini Birthright, an elderly Holmes and Watson have a further meeting with the great escapologist, Harry Houdini in one of his ghost-busting exploits. Later, they are called upon to investigate Houdini's death.
As well as showing Holmes' deductive powers, the high falutin lifestyle and odd circumstances of the death of Houdini, the novel manages to cast light on the political situation of Hungary between the two world wars.
As a bonus, Andrews throws in two encounters between Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
By combining diverse plot elements with a fine touch in characterisation and a surprise outcome, this book, like most of Val Andrews' Holmes pastiches, is a satisfying read.

One of Val's better books

Having read several of Val's pastiches, I believe this is one of his better efforts. Conan Doyle and his wife appear as spiritualists. Houdini is drawn as an interesting character. The solution is far-fetched but entertaining, and does come as a bit of a surprise. Watson's skeptical comments upon observing a meeting of Sherlockians is quite humorous as well. Andrews does get the voices of Sherlock and Watson right most of the time.

Great Deadpool Book

This is a fantastic book for any Deadpool fan. The stories are not connected to the ongoing series, just A LOT of short stories, very funny!
Included in this set are Deadpool #900 and #1000. Again lots of short unconnected but great stories. Probably my favorite was the Maltese Bunny. It combines Deadpool and his stable of characters and the classic film noir Maltese Falcon.
Also included in the book are Captain America: Who Won't Wear the Shield. The first story in this is a very strange hybrid of Captain American and Dr. Strange (not all that good IMHO) but the second story reimagines Deadpool as a Nazi experiment to duplicate the Super Soldier program, with hilarious results.
Also contains Deadpool Teamup #1 which has nothing to do with the Deadpool Teamup series and he really doesn't teamp up with anyone. But he does fight a pint-sized clone of himself and recounts his past as a summo wrestler.
I bought this just for 900 and 1000 so I was pleased with the extras. It is a very fun TPB especially for Deadpool fans.

LOTS of different stories. Deadpool gets abducted by ufo, ends up crashing it. Takes care of child molesting dr. Visits old friend over a pinky bet made when 11. Punishes 3 crocked cops. Decides to kill all his readers so he can die. On a vacation cruise sinks the boat. His Sumo wrestling days. A black widow lady killing high rollers in Reno. Many one or two page stories. Goat lovers, magic talking toliets making every possible version of Deadpool. All these plus a few more and of course Deadpool's insane sense of humor and action.

About the Author
David Stone is a former British army infantry officer. Much of his service was in Germany, both with and alongside soldiers of the Bundeswehr in peacetime and on operations. He became a military historian in 2002 and is the author of the authoritative works Hitler's Army: The Men, Machines and Organisation, 1939-1945 (2009) and Fighting for the Fatherland: The Story of the German Soldier from 1648 to the Present Day (2006).

Useful, but overpriced

THe book is interesting, but hardly what most of us expected. The author covers each branch of the German military, it role and capabilities. The detail is sufficient but other books cover much of this. What most of us are looking for is a decent order of battle for the German army and how it changed during the First World War. That feature is total lacking, as it is in most other books. If you are looking for the OB for the German army and how it changed during the war, this is not the book for you. Consider the high price of the book, which is not unusual for many books today, the lack of OBs is a serious disappointment. Part I does cover the period from 1871 to 1914 with some interesting background material. Part II is the war - nothing special. Part III is the structure of the military - short and useful. Part IV Officers and Soldiers followed by uniforms and equipment, then the Combat Arms (describing various types of units) next is Supporting arms and finally field training sections and the end of the army. There is a good glossary, but the price is still too high for what you get. IF the author revised it to include orders of battle showing the changes during the war, then it would be worth the price.

Soldier fighting against overwhelming odds and opposition numbers.

Interesting insight into an Army's professionalism often defeating less capable Armies. They experienced the same hardship as the opposition Armies. The soldier was a pawn in an endless struggle which completely changed the face of Europe both East and West as well as the Middle East.

Disappointing and harsh

I typically enjoy Claire Thompson's work, but this one didn't really do it for me, at all.

I think it was too harsh, misogynistic, the elements of cruelty and torture were too much for me and I am not that sensitive.

I will continue to check out Ms. Thompson's future stories, but this was a disappointment.

All torture, abuse and rape

I am definitely the fan of an anti-hero or the alpha male. But Ellis Hughes is just a down right villain with no redeeming qualities. I enjoy reading dark erotica, particularly anything pertaining to Stockholm syndrome. In this book that is not the case and Mia never falls in love with Ellis because he is so extremely horrible to her. Ellis is a sadist to the extreme of torturing his victim, unwilling victim that is, and Mia is not a masochist whatsoever. The synopsis and the reviews of this book are accurate (except for the description "erotic" torture) and I should have taken them into consideration, so I'm not going to knock the book completely. I will say the book was well written and had a good plot. I just wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is looking for a BDSM romance. I certainly wasn't looking to read sunshine and roses, however, I do like in the end when the a**hole turns out to be a nice guy. With that being said, I would pass on this book and save your $$$.

Dark, Twisted, & Brutal! Loved it!

This was a dark read, taking a woman down a very dark path of pain, humiliation, and brainwashing and it's gut-wrenching.

Mia accepts a job with the very handsome, very rich Ellis L. Hughes and she's very excited to start her new life. She gets a new life alright, but the job is bogus, her "job" is to become the perfect submissive for a cruel and sadistic Ellis and her training starts within the hour of walking in the door to start her new job.

Ellis chose Mia out of over 20 applicants, not because she was his perfect woman, but because she had no family, no boyfriend, and no kids. No one to miss her or come looking for her. She's a little overweight, no worries, he has the perfect diet plan for that.

He takes everything away from her then does everything to break her, but there is still a resistance in her that he vows to break. And he does. It's when Ellis cuts Mia's beautiful hair off and shaves her head. The moment I knew what was coming I had to actually put the book down and walk away. The author's description of this was heartbreaking. When I came back and started reading again, I really didn't think he would do it. He seemed to waver, but then it became about power and control and he *knew* he had to go through with it. It was the obsessive need for total power and control over another living person that seems to drive Ellis, and above all the other sadistic things he did to Mia, this was the one thing that fractured her and completely broke her.

She lives a harrowing "life" as Ellis' slave. She is forced to sleep in a cage at night beside his bed, most times bound while inside the cage. She is denied food and water on a whim, and when he does give her food, it is usually only a few bites a day and only after she has pleased him. She is only fed from his hand while she kneels next to him. There is also a punishment cage in a dark closet for those times when she *doesn't* please him. There is water torture, breath play, anal, and any sadistic "toy" you can think of on a regular, if not daily basis, including stocks that she is locked into for hours at a time.

This book is not for the faint of heart. It's dark, twisted, and brutal. But I will say that there are some pretty good twists that will make you want to keep turning the pages faster and faster in a race to the finish. I read this book in one day, just couldn't put it down.

Claire Thompson is quickly becoming my "go to author" when I need that dark, non-con read.

Solid 4 star read.

"I feel the greatest strength of the textbook, and the one that prompted my selection of it, was the balanced treatment of the key components: music fundamentals; history of western European art music; American popular music; and world music. Although I would welcome more expansive treatment of world music, this volume provides much better treatment than the cursory nod provided in most other music appreciation textbooks."

About the Author
Charles Hoffer is Professor of Music at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He formerly taught at Indiana University, served as president of the Music Educators National Conference, and is an established author of books and articles about music.

Darrell Bailey is Professor of Music at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. He taught at Oberlin Conservatory and the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington and later was the founding director of the music program of the IU School of Music in Indianapolis. Subsequently, he founded the new media program at Indianapolis and was the founding executive associate dean of the first School of Informatics in the United States.
