"Gol" (legends of Ansu)" is the first book that introduces us to themythical world of author J.W.Webb and what a crazy, fantastical,marvelous world it is! It is imaginative pulls no punches in drawingfrom almost every available literary element available. This is a rarenovel that I thought had almost everything, from heart pounding battlescenes, to romantic love scenes, to twisted (and I mean twisted) familyrelationships, magical/supernatural elements, danger... it's hard not to find something you like. There are dark secrets revealed throughout,and nothing is predictable or what you think will happen. Kept meturning the pages late into the night! One thing I'll say is that I wasimpressed with how well the author J.W.Webb wrote it, there were almostnone of the mistakes I frequently see in new writers (slow beginnings,adverb abuse in dialogue tags, telling v. showing, etc.). Gol" by J.W.Webb was a different type of book for me as I'm not a hugefantasy reader, although I do enjoy the genre. I'd read and enjoyedanother novel of J.W.Webb's ("The Haven" - Check it out!) and when I saw this one as being appealing for fans of "Lord of the Rings" and "Gameof Thrones" - two sagas that I really like, I thought I'd give this atry and see how I liked it. That said, here are my thoughts: I likedthat it was fast paced and with plenty of action, especially for a longbook. It wasn't predictable at all... and it kept my attention the whole way through. I don't think I was able to stop reading the last 30% orso! There were many characters, and I had no real concept of theindividual personalities, looks, etc... I did appreciate theintelligent, multi-layered plot - it forces you to pay attention andthink -actively engage the story. So not some easy breezy fluff beachread. To my surprise I found myself really sucked into the story, somuch so that I shed a few tears and may have cursed a few charactersalong the way. Was satisfied with the ending, but not *happy* if thatmake sense. But it's okay... Overall an enjoyable read that I'drecommend to others, and I'm really glad I gave it a shalt. For me, author voice is almost everything, and it will make or break anovel and my enjoyment of it. I need to hear originality and know thatthe author is not trying to sound or write like someone else, but istelling HIS story in a whole new way, whatever that story may be. I feel like I can smell a fake a mile away, and believe me I've read my fairshare of books from authors who are 'trying' to emulate better, moreaccomplished authors in their genre. What impressed me the most here was that I thought that Mr. Webb's writing style has the confidence anddelightful quirkiness of a much more seasoned pro... I know he's written another book, but this feels, reads, and presents like a master of hiscraft. The characters had that elusive 'flavor' that only comes whenthey are fully realized and fleshed out, something that is not easilydone, especially in a novel of this depth and magnitude of complexissues. There were so many things I loved about this book, I hardly know where to begin. First, I loved the cover. And those amazing illustrations are done by Tolkien's illustrator? Wow, that is so incredible! Second, I love the way J.W. Webb writes characters and especially dialogue and action scenes. I really feel like I am inside the story, as a part of it, instead of being on the outside looking in and having a story "told" to me. Mr. Webb's vivid descriptions and lyrical prose creates a beautiful portrait and a frightening, mystical world that one can get lost in for hours and hours. This books seriously has everything good--action, fantasy, romance, good and evil, magic, ...I wish this series could be made into a movie, although it probably wouldn't be as good as the book anyways. But I thought the plot was highly creative, even for a fantasy, and wasn't just a re-telling of the same overused plot devices we always see. It is timeless and in my opinion a very clever piece of writing... a complexity of characters who are both so real and surreal in a world that is closer to our own than we would admit; a future classic! A great find!

This book was a great find. It's bigger than the books I usually read but I couldn't put it down. It's definately epic fantasy, the plot is tense and the characters very real. The fight scenes are amazing, but there are many moments of haunting mystery and conflicting love that give this story added depth. I stayed up late many nights in a rush to finish this. Have to say the ending blew me away! Totaly wicked!

I really loved this! Fantasy, war, epic, love story, and dry comedy - Gol has it all, yet it's effortless, fast-paced, and evocative. One of those novels where the characters stay with you long after you close your Kindle/ipad/the book's cover. Satisfying, fun, rich, and deep. I think my favorite part of it was that the characters are multi-dimensional and realistic (differing from many fantasy-genre characters), and that they grow and change through the events of the novel. Highly recommended to Game of Thrones fans (but this has more humor, and the plot actually develops and ends).

Amazing Book! Such a magical journey!

This was a fantastic book! I probably never would have found this book had it not been for the Books & The Bear book tour. I never really got into the Lord of the Rings series and was never really into that kind of story line where there were tons of characters and epic quests. I don’t know, I always found them kind of cliche. However, this book was really really good and overall was highly enjoyable.
First thing I will mention is that it had a LOT of characters all from different provinces and kingdoms and such. I wasn’t aware of this, but at the end of the book (I read the ebook as that’s what’s emailed for book tours and such), was the list of characters which I wish I knew about before I started the book because it would have helped keep track of who was who a little bit more. I would sometimes read and think I was reading about one character and something drastic would happen and I’d be like ‘no, he would never do that’ and then I’d realize that it was a completely different character than who I thought it was. That wasn’t a massive problem but it meant I would sometimes need to go back to see what I had just read again or take a few minutes to straighten out who was who exactly.
With all of these characters, there was a lot of character development as well. Sometimes it was for the better and sometimes it wasn’t. Which was definitely nice because it wasn’t a fairy-tale ending. That helped to make it more realistic and kept you on your toes a lot more.
The next thing I wanted to mention is the age group which this book is for. I would definitely recommend this book for older readers due to the fact that there was sex, language and a lot of violence.
The sex was not exactly graphic, but there was a fair amount of it and it was quite….I guess the word would be violent. In the world, as well as times, that the book was set, women weren’t necessarily, well usually, were not married to men whom they loved. So with Lissanes love life, her sex scenes were generally a little more along the lines of rape, as that is kind of what it was like (think Game of Thrones for those of you who watch it). Also a lot of the men were pig and so they would just have sex with women left, right and center without caring about what they did. So in that aspect it was kind of graphic but it was true to what it would be like though.
The language wasn’t excessive but with certain characters, to highlight the fact that they were rude and uncivilized, they may use more foul language than others. So there were moments when words were used that definitely were not appropriate for younger audiences.
For the violence, there was a lot of that. Whether it be from torture scenes to just general fighting. It generally wasn’t terribly graphic, but there was lots of threats of removing the male member from people, as well as various torture scenes that weren’t that vivid but if you’re like me who reads and really gets into the book, your mind makes up wonderful images, so in that sense it was kind of brutal.
I personally didn’t mind the sex, language and violence as it added character to the book. In my opinion it stayed quite true to what the medial sort of times would have been like with rivaling kingdoms and magical kinds of creatures.
And that’s another thing. There was magic and sorcery and demons but it wasn’t something that took up the entire book. It was a theme that kept appearing and it wasn’t really a massive thing until book two (the book was split into two books). Then Erun went on an epic quest to find his love. That kind of reminded me of The Princess Bride, in a few aspects now that I look back on it while I write this review.
But overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was about 550 pages so it took me a little while to read, but I finished it and thought it was pretty creative and a nice change from all of the other stuff out there.
I highly do recommend it. But a warning. Prepare yourself for a fantastical journey. You may just encounter fire demon along the way.
