It's colorful inside a computer.
By Melanie D. Typaldos
I am reading the Nebula Award winning novels in chronological order. This is the winner for 1985.

I didn't like it but I didn't hate it.

It's full of detailed, but repetitive, scenes of life when you mentally get inside computer systems. These images, while fanciful, are completely off the wall. Maybe it's that the book is showing its age. The world is extremely violent to the point where they could be no structured society. Nobody thinks, you know, maybe I shouldn't kill that person.

There were several times when I thought, okay, it's over. But it wasn't. It kept going on with more of the same.

I was not able to identify with any of the characters, nor did I see their personalities develop.

These Nebula Award winners are a mixed bag. Some are great. Some are awful. This was slightly to the awful side.

Incredible imagination, incredible writing.
By Smiling Hotei
This book popularized a new genre - cyberpunk. Although Gibson may not have been the first to explore the cyberspace world (e.g., Brunner, Vinge, and others) he entered with a splash, or perhaps a tsunami. What is most ironic is that Gibson wrote Neuromancer on a typewriter, not being a computer user.

The opening line of Necromancer is often cited as an example of creative writing. Rather than opening with "It was a dark and stormy night" Gibson introduces us to his world with, "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."

""It's not like I'm using," Case heard someone say, as he shouldered his way through the crowd around the door of the Chat. "It's like my body's developed this massive drug deficiency." It was a Sprawl voice and a Sprawl joke. The Chatsubo was a bar for professional expatriates; you could drink there for a week and never hear two words in Japanese...."

Welcome to the Sprawl...

The book that started it all.
By kittybot
What can one say about the book that started cyberpunk? Well, probably not much about it starting cyberpunk, as Gibson notoriously hates the term. But this is a complete masterpiece. Thrilling, inventive, emotionally gripping, thought-provoking, grittier than reality ever was, and just plain cool to boot. I read Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash as my first foray into the genre termed 'cyberpunk' (and have since re-read it many times, as I'm sure I'll do with Neuromancer) and decided I had to see the start of it all. I wasn't disappointed and I would highly recommend this for any fan of technology, hacking, body modification, virtual reality, politics, science fiction, futurism, any sort of punk, mind-bending, or exciting stories of any kind. Do yourself a favor and read this if you haven't already; do yourself a favor and reread it if you have.

We take thousands of inventions for granted, using them daily and enjoying their benefits. But how much do we really know about their origins and development? This absorbing new book tells the stories behind the inventions that have changed the world, with details about--

  • Convenience items, such as safety pins, toothbrushes, and bifocals
  • Weapons of war, including explosives, gunpowder, and shrapnel shells
  • Industrial advances, such as the steam engine and the power loom for weaving
  • Transportation advances, including the airplane, the diesel engine, the automobile, and the air-inflated rubber tire
  • Electronic marvels, including color television, the microprocessor, the personal computer, the compact disc, and the cell phone
  • Medical advances, from antiseptic surgery to the electron microscope. . . and much more.

Inventors and pioneers of science and technology, including Eli Whitney, James Watt, Benjamin Franklin, Henry Bessemer, Thomas Edison, J.B. Dunlop, the Wright Brothers, Werner von Braun, Jonas Salk, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and many others are also discussed. Fascinating photos and illustrations complement authoritative summaries of each invention, and remarkable quotations from many of the inventors add to this chronicle of human ingenuity that began some 6,000 years ago with the invention of the wheel. Approximately 700 photos and illustrations in color and black and white.

Thisoverview of creative thinking and innovation moves chronologically from one advancement to another. Photos, advertisements, and schematics of the locomotive, zoom lens, lie detector, World Wide Web, and Segway enhance history with succinct captioning and color or black-and-white illustrations of thedevices in use. Commentary and glosses are succinct and inclusive without dumbing down the material. Beginning with stone tools and fire, coverage veers rapidly away from domestic developments. The list omits knitting, a medieval transformation in clothing design, and subsequent necessities such as the infant nurser, faucet diverter valve, powdered yeast, sheet gelatin, denim, oven thermometer, garment elastic, and food processor. Weaknesses include unusual spelling errors (carburettor, brwmplant) and inadequate cross-referencing. Although there are indexes for inventions and inventors, the absence of a general index is a drawback.Nonetheless, this is a valuable and inexpensive reference text for the school and public library and for the homeschooler. --Mary Ellen Snodgrass

A simply amazing and beautiful thick tome of inventions
    By Michael A. Duvernois
I spotted this book while walking through Powell's Bookstore and thumbed through it a bit. Wrote the title down and ordered it when I got home.

The book is an amazing compendium of inventions with detailed images, cutaway drawings, and background text. It covers all of human history with an obvious bias towards the technological present. Though I've owned it now a couple of months, I have only scratched at the surface of the information in the book. Reading articles here and there and then being led online to search for more detail. An excellent book for the internet era.

The World Made Straight: A Novel, by Ron Rash

In an Appalachian community haunted by the legacy of a Civil War massacre, a rebellious young man struggles to escape the violence that would bind him to the past

Travis Shelton is seventeen the summer he wanders onto a neighbor's property in the woods, discovers a crop of marijuana large enough to make him some serious money, and steps into the jaws of a bear trap. After hours of passing in and out of consciousness, Travis is discovered by Carlton Toomey, the wise and vicious farmer who set the trap to protect his plants, and Travis's confrontation with the subtle evils within his rural world has begun.
Before long, Travis has moved out of his parents' home to live with Leonard Shuler, a one-time schoolteacher who lost his job and custody of his daughter years ago, when he was framed by a vindictive student. Now Leonard lives with his dogs and his sometime girlfriend in a run-down trailer outside town, deals a few drugs, and studies journals from the Civil War. Travis becomes his student, of sorts, and the fate of these two outsiders becomes increasingly entwined as the community's terrible past and corrupt present bear down on each of them from every direction, leading to a violent reckoning--not only with Carlton, but with the legacy of the Civil War massacre that, even after a century, continues to divide an Appalachian community.
Vivid, harrowing, yet ultimately hopeful, The World Made Straight offers a powerful exploration of the painful conflict between the bonds of home and the desire for independence.

    From Publishers Weekly
Rash's finely wrought third novel (after Saints at the River) follows the wayward trajectory of high school dropout Travis Shelton, who stumbles on a neighbor's crop of marijuana while out fishing in Madison County, N.C. He steals a few plants to sell to Leonard Shuler, a divorced and disgraced former high school teacher, who is living in a trailer and selling drugs. Travis has a violent run-in with the father-and-son Toomeys, who own the crop, and is left hospitalized and homeless. He moves in with Leonard and his pill-popping girlfriend. There, Travis and Leonard study the Civil War ledgers and journals of a Dr. Candler, and learn of the county's seismic upheaval during the Shelton Laurel Massacre and its aftermath. Meanwhile, the Toomeys, who do business with Leonard, are not finished exacting their pound of flesh, this time from Leonard. Rash's vivid prose depicts his characters' dependence on drugs, alcohol and hell-raising with sympathy, rendering their shared sense of futility and economic entrapment without sentimentality or easy answers. The Civil War sections are less successful, but they convey the past's hold on the present and ground Rash's Appalachian wanderers in a shared vision of American immobility.

    From Booklist
High-schooler Travis Shelton steals one too many marijuana plants from vicious tobacco-farmer-turned-drug-dealer Carlton Toomey and ends up caught in a bear trap, his foot so mangled he needs surgery. Travis' stern father kicks him out, and he ends up bunking at the rundown trailer of bookish Leonard Shuler, a low-level drug dealer and former schoolteacher who lost his job and his family because of false charges. Leonard sees in Travis something of himself in his youth, when he used his intelligence to outrun the fate that lies in store for so many of the region's poverty-stricken residents. He bonds with the boy over their shared fascination with a local Civil War incident, a massacre that divided the town. Just as Leonard starts to get his own life in order and talks Travis into making plans for college, he becomes enmeshed in a confrontation with Toomey. Part melancholy historical novel and part high-voltage thriller, this third novel from the talented Rash will appeal to readers who like their suspense done with literary flair. Joanne Wilkinson

    Review
"This is the third novel by Ron Rash that has brought my life to a grinding halt -- but to praise Rash simply as a powerful storyteller would be to overlook his gifts as a profoundly ethical writer and, at the same time, a poet with a fine and tender eye for the beauty of nature. What I love and admire most of all about this book, however, is its fierce confrontation of a human dilemma that has sparked too many of the world's most violent tragedies: the burning question of just how much allegiance we owe family and community, including the ghosts from our past."--Julia Glass, author of Three Junes

"The World Made Straight is a wonderful, heartbreaking, heart-healing kind of work, a work of genius--genius and insight and poetry and the kind of language that whispers to me like music coming back off dense wet hills and upturned faces."--Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina

"Rash writes with beauty and simplicity, understanding his characters with a poet's eye and heart and telling their tale with a poet's tongue."
--William Gay, author of Provinces of Night

"Ron Rash writes so well about real people, people one paycheck short of extinction, that you care what happens to his characters in every clause. In A World Made Straight, he shows how much trouble a poor ol' boy can get in, just trying to catch a fish or two. Even in this novel, his words sound like poetry."
--Rick Bragg, author of All Over but the Shoutin' and Ava's Man

"Deft, intelligent, crisp, sensual and lyrical, The World Made Straight is the best work yet by a wonderful writer. This is why we read books: to encounter a great story told well."--Rick Bass

    A Quick Read
    By susan smith
Ron Rash tells a compelling story. From about the fifth page, I was hooked and couldn't put the book down. In a tale somewhat reminiscent of Winter's Bone, he builds quite a bit of pathos for his two main characters--an ex-teacher now drug dealer and a high school boy with an abusive father. It wraps up somewhat unrealistically, with some of the characters needing more fleshing out. However, it will be hard to forget Carlton Tooney, the kingpin of the Appalachian town, who can sing like an angel but whom it would be most unwise to cross. Rash is a talented writer, who creates vivid images and pitch-perfect sentences. The book is short, and there is plenty of rich material there that could have been expanded so that the characters' motives were more convincing and some loose ends handled a bit better. Overall, though, I enjoyed it.

    Worth a read
    By V
Finished this book yesterday after reading it on and off for about three weeks. The characters in the book are developed well, though I think some of the descriptions and plot arcs are repetitive. Rash takes the time to develop an intriguing plot, but the ending of the book is a bit rushed. Regardless, this book is worth the read, especially if you have any interest in Appalachian communities and the aftermath of war. The characters are relatable and easy to sympathize with.

The Perfect End to an Awesome Trilogy
    By Leanna
Talia has just completed her intership in the field and can now begin her career as Queen's Own Herald. Her first major assignment is to investigate a marriage proposal from Prince Ancar of the neighboring kingdom of Hardorn and to make sure that all is order there for the Queen's visit. She teams up with Kris again to complete this task only to discover that Ancar has his own dark plans for them, their Queen and Valdemar...
"Arrow's Fall" is the final book in Mercedes Lackey's The Heralds of Valdemar Trilogy. This has been one of the best trilogies I have ever read, and this was the best book of this trilogy. It had incredible emotional power, and I found myself crying at various moments throughout the last 100 pages or so. The ending was unbelievable and utterly perfect. It made me cry even more than the other parts.
"Arrow's Fall" is a much darker book than its predecessors, so I would not recommend it to young readers. I do feel that the darkness adds depth and credibility to the story, but for mature readers only.
Bottom Line: A GREAT read! What a fabulous trilogy!! I dare you to read it without crying at least once.

If you like fantasy, you'll love this book!
Of all the Valdemar books, this is one of my favorites!
If you have liked any of the Valdemar books, your sure to like this one. Of course, read the first two books (Arrows of the Queen and Arrows Flight) in the Arrows series before this one.
It's about the Herald Talia. When the princess Elspeth is looking for eligible suitors, Talia and her friend Kris are sent to a foreign country to check if a prince is really as kind as he seems. When they arrive, they realize that Ancar (the prince) is going to kill his father, most of the other court members, and them! I won't say anymore because it could spoil the book.

One of the best books I have read.
    By T. Hamilton
of the entire arrow's series this is definitely the best.I read it in one sitting.
Talia and Kris are supposed to go out and see a foreign pince to decide if he is a good suitor for Elspeth. All seems well at first but behind the grins and merriment of the people there is fear of this prince who revels in death and pain. They arive at court and Talia senses danger with her gift of empathy, and that danger is not only to that kingdom but also their own.
The best part in the book is definitely the battle. I was grinning in exitement when Valdemar pulled out a 'secret weapon' that is quite a strange one. It is spoken of in previous books but instantly forgotten when it seems of no importance.
almost all the loose end are tied up. I say almost because there are few remaining. One of them at least is a very large loose end but ther is one that is less obvious ( I wonder if anyone else noticed). I just hope they will all come together in the next Valdemar books( I also hope there will be new mysteries, after all who wants Mercedes Lackey to ever stop writing?)

The Microsoft?Data Warehouse Toolkit: With SQL Server?2005 and the Microsoft Business Intelligence Toolset, by Joy Mundy, Warren Thornthwa

This groundbreaking book is the first in the Kimball Toolkit series to be product-specific. Microsoft’s BI toolset has undergone significant changes in the SQL Server 2005 development cycle. SQL Server 2005 is the first viable, full-functioned data warehouse and business intelligence platform to be offered at a price that will make data warehousing and business intelligence available to a broad set of organizations. This book is meant to offer practical techniques to guide those organizations through the myriad of challenges to true success as measured by contribution to business value.

Building a data warehousing and business intelligence system is a complex business and engineering effort. While there are significant technical challenges to overcome in successfully deploying a data warehouse, the authors find that the most common reason for data warehouse project failure is insufficient focus on the business users and business problems. In an effort to help people gain success, this book takes the proven Business Dimensional Lifecycle approach first described in best selling The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit and applies it to the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 tool set.

Beginning with a thorough description of how to gather business requirements, the book then works through the details of creating the target dimensional model, setting up the data warehouse infrastructure, creating the relational atomic database, creating the analysis services databases, designing and building the standard report set, implementing security, dealing with metadata, managing ongoing maintenance and growing the DW/BI system. All of these steps tie back to the business requirements. Each chapter describes the practical steps in the context of the SQL Server 2005 platform.

    Intended Audience

The target audience for this book is the IT department or service provider (consultant) who is:

    • Planning a small to mid-range data warehouse project;
    • Evaluating or planning to use Microsoft technologies as the primary or exclusive data warehouse server technology;
    • Familiar with the general concepts of data warehousing and business intelligence.

The book will be directed primarily at the project leader and the warehouse developers, although everyone involved with a data warehouse project will find the book useful. Some of the book’s content will be more technical than the typical project leader will need; other chapters and sections will focus on business issues that are interesting to a database administrator or programmer as guiding information.

The book is focused on the mass market, where the volume of data in a single application or data mart is less than 500 GB of raw data. While the book does discuss issues around handling larger warehouses in the Microsoft environment, it is not exclusively, or even primarily, concerned with the unusual challenges of extremely large datasets.

    Not a "How To", it's a methodology
    By Craig
Excellent book for middle to upper management to learn the 10,000 foot overview of data warehousing. Reading this book can give you all the jargon you'll need to smooze your fellow IT personnel across a conference room table about data warehousing.

Unfortunately, I was looking for a book that would actually spell out HOW TO use SQL Server 2005 Integration Services and Analysis Services.

Another Home Run From the Kimball Group
    By Jim Stagnitto
Perhaps, like me, you consider yourself a data warehousing professional with some hard-won expertise? Perhaps you too have stockpiled a number of assumptions about "what works" and "what doesn't" when it comes to building large, grown-up data warehouses? Candidly - for me - the "what doesn't" category - for some years now - has included the Microsoft SQL Server DBMS. This perception was shaped by some bad experiences - 100 years ago - with early SQL Server products. Beautiful interfaces and literature promising administration-lite databasing did little to instill confidence back then, and (in my unscientific survey) the products failed way too frequently (and sometimes in spectacular fashion) when dealing with data volumes larger than a breadbox. But, in typical Microsoft fashion, the shortcomings of these early releases get addressed - slowly yet relentlessly - over time. And I've known for awhile that I'm seriously remiss in having a second serious look at Microsoft's data warehousing suite.

Enter Warren Thornthwaite and Joy Mundy's terrific new book: "The Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit":

The clearly written and lint-free text describes the now-mature suite of Microsoft data warehousing technologies and tools in the context of the super-powerful Ralph Kimball design techniques that are now fully recognized as best practice in the field. Warren & Joy provide expert advice in how to leverage these tools to build industrial-strength, contemporary, end-to-end business intelligence solutions.

This is another home run from the Kimball Group.

None of the tough design challenges in the Kimball Toolkit series have been glossed over, and the authors are refreshingly candid in their advice on how best to exploit the MS tools' strengths - with pragmatic advice on how best to dodge their weaknesses.

The power of Ralph's design techniques, in concert with the undeniably compelling price/performance of the MS product line, is going to be very disruptive to the data warehousing status quo. I believe that we specialists in the field have a choice: embrace this new reality, or quietly fade away. Sadly, I'm in no position to retire yet, so I choose the former. The "Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit" has actually got me excited about building my first end-to-end Microsoft data warehouse. Given my historical biases - believe me - there can be no stronger endorsement!

Congratulations to the authors for a wonderful contribution to the field.

Another Grand Slam From The Kimball Group
    By JP O'Connor
It should come as no surprise to readers of Ralph Kimball's work that this latest offering from two members of the Kimball Group is every bit as insightful, practical, and useful as previous books in the toolkit series.

This book is not another "condensed software manual" nor is it an idealized or theoretic idea of how someone thinks a project ought to be done. Rather, this book is "roll up your sleeves, hands on, this is how to make it work in the real world" kind of material from authors who have been there and done that many times over.

Experience is a dear teacher, especially in data warehousing, and Joy, Warren, and Ralph freely share their insights. At pertinent points, they provide pointers to external references for digging deeper. An example of this are the references provided on page 411 related to image density and information display. The companion web site already has several useful tools and the collection will likely grow in the coming weeks.

While this book builds on the previous Data Warehouse Toolkit, Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit, and Data Warehouse ETL Toolkit books, it is self contained and comprehensive. The previous books provide much additional detail of course. This book takes those ideas and shows us how to implement them using Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 suite of tools.

Instead of providing a bunch of disjoint "tips" or examples, a complete project is taken from start to finish to show how the design choices and strategies - based on requirements - lead to implementation choices and techniques and how all the components are brought together in a comprehensive end result.

The book hadn't been on my desk 30 minutes before co-workers were already trying to borrow it. I think they each need to buy their own copy!

An Introduction to Partial Differential Equations, by Yehuda Pinchover, Jacob Rubinstein

A complete introduction to partial differential equations, this textbook provides a rigorous yet accessible guide to students in mathematics, physics and engineering. The presentation is lively and up to date, paying particular emphasis to developing an appreciation of underlying mathematical theory. Beginning with basic definitions, properties and derivations of some basic equations of mathematical physics from basic principles, the book studies first order equations, classification of second order equations, and the one-dimensional wave equation. Two chapters are devoted to the separation of variables, whilst others concentrate on a wide range of topics including elliptic theory, Green's functions, variational and numerical methods. A rich collection of worked examples and exercises accompany the text, along with a large number of illustrations and graphs to provide insight into the numerical examples. Solutions to selected exercises are included for students and extended solution sets are available to lecturers from solutions@cambridge.org.

    Review
"This is an introductory book on the subject of partial differential equations which is suitable for a large variety of basic courses on this topic. In particular, it can be used as a textbook or self-study book for large classes of readers with interests in mathematics, engineering, and related fields. Its usefulness stems from its clarity, balance and conciseness, achieved without compromising the mathematical rigor. One particularly attractive feature is the way in which the authors managed to emphasize the relevance of the theoretical tools in connection with practical applications."

    Good for starters
    By Me
This book was the primary textbook for my first year graduate PDE's class (I am an Applied Math student). The supplementary textbook was the one written by Strauss, which is the traditional undergraduate leveled text. My background is in Physics so I have seen PDE's before, just not in any detail as this.

As a textbook, I liked it. It was easy to read through and the hints in the back of the book were helpful when I was having a tough time solving the problems (some of which are quite difficult, others less so). I can say that I learned enough PDE's to be able to solve them properly if I were to see a PDE lying around in a, say, physics book! You will learn solving techniques reading through this book.

This text, unfortunately, is far from thorough, as the other reviewer has pointed out. This is an Applied Math textbook, NOT a Pure Math textbook! I had Evans' book with me the whole time and they were worlds apart! I tried to go through Evans' book along-side after reviewing a subject (like The Method of Characteristics) from P&R and it was a challenge. You won't become an expert in PDE theory using this book. It is most certainly an introduction. You don't see one bit of Sobolev spaces in the entire text; the treatment of shocks and conservation laws are left to a minimum, you don't even see a statement about the Reimann Problem (which comes up in research today)! Yes, there are many application but one thing I find tragic (coming from physics) is that the *interpretation* is kept to a minimum as well! Many "applied" mathematicians feel free to do this, I find, and it irks me to no end. The chapters on Separation of Variables and Sturm-Liouville theory is not complete either - this is to be expected since the topic can span multiple books by themselves. They do a good job of *introducing* you to the material, however.

I found myself always looking up other texts for another point of view and, perhaps, an interpretation or a better understanding of some results. For Separation of Variable and a view of Sturm-Liouville problems from a different angle, I whole-heartedly recommend taking a look at Churchill and Brown's "Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems" and "Fourier Analysis" by Korner. I find the treatment of Characteristcs to be done better and more intuitively by Zauderer. Uniqueness proofs are a strength of P&R and the only other book I found to be as easy to read regarding them is the one by Strauss.

All in all, this is a good book, don't get me wrong, it's just that you won't become an expert in the field. If you want a working knowledge of PDE's, I would recommend this book, Erich Zauderer's book, and Churchill and Brown's (excellent) book on Fourier Series; all of them to be read together.

Nice and efficient work for physicists and engineers
    By TOE
This book will give physicists and engineers a working knowledge of partial differential equations, which permeate their fields but whose underlying mathematics too many students just still ignore. That text is written very fluently and theorems and proofs appear only when the concepts and methods at stakes have been carefully presented through many examples. I generally prefer the top-to-bottom approach but it appeared that the one used in this book works quite well if you want to become more familiar with PDEs but don't necessarily want to be an expert on this field.

Using this book was absolute HELL - 6 years later and I'm still thinking about it!
    By A. Goncharov
I used this book in an undergraduate course at the University of Toronto. As a result of the course I took with this book, I specialized in subjects that were completely orthogonal to differential equations in my Master's studies in mathematics. So what was so bad about this book? Well, one funny factoid about this book was the amount of errors that we found as a class. This was a small specialized class consisting of future mathematics researchers in undergrad (At UofT there is a "Specialist Mathematics" major, for which this course is an option), and we actually started a PDF compilation of all the errors in the book and kept updating it almost every week and keeping it on the course website.
Usually when you have questions after a lecture, you go back and read the chapter of the book corresponding to this material. But this book doesn't allow you to do that, no matter how hard you try. The explanations skip steps, don't motivate the material, use words they haven't defined, and back up their arguments with diagrams that are not explained. I could go on and on, but why bother? The point is, the flaws I outlined are repeated over and over again, so the authors weren't interested in exposing the student to an exciting field while writing this book. The problem with people who understand very advanced material, is that it takes a completely different skill to teach it to someone. These authors wrote this book as if explaining something in their own words to themselves, but not assuming the elementary knowledge of someone who may first encounter these ideas. (By the way, isn't that known in logic as "begging the question", or "preaching to the choir"?)
So take this review with a grain of salt (like you should all reviews) but don't say I haven't warned you!
Good luck and I hope you get a GREAT professor.

A cheeky, sophisticated, and strikingly illustrated guide that leaves generic English reference books in the dust

When prominent Barcelona-based illustrator Luci Gutirrez found herself tuning out in English class, she used her love of drawing to help retain what she’d learned. Ditching the kind of bland and useless phrases that fill most English textbooks, Gutirrez uses whimsical characters, cheeky dialogue, and even insults to bring vocabulary, grammar, and usage topics to life.

Nearly forty-seven million people in the United States speak a language other than English at home, and even most native speakers struggle with subtle distinctions, such as when to use “whether” as opposed to “if.” (For example: I wonder whether I should have added a little more poison to his tea.) Already published to wide acclaim abroad, English Is Not Easy is sure to delight grammar mavens and students of English in America.

It's quite helpful, with a lot of real-world examples you can't find from a formal textbook. It's entertaining, so students actually Want to read it at their leisure! So, they learn English for fun! Highly recommended for ESL teachers and SOME students
    By The Great Cham
As an adult ESL teacher, I found this book a delightful and amusing take on ESL grammar and vocabulary. It's true, some of the illustrations are "pornographic," as another reviewer put it, and there's some dark humor in the book, so some of it would not be appropriate for K-12 students or more conservative adult students. But no intelligent teacher would just give a book like this to students. Rather, the best approach, I think, is to select some of the very funny examples and illustrations to show to students; they will be more memorable than the run-of-the-mill textbook examples and therefore more helpful in learning the language. As for the reviewer who claimed that there are grammatical errors, I'd like to know what he or she is talking about. As far as I can tell, the author is accurate and admirably clear in her explanations of the finer points of English.

The cultural icons of Pharaonic Egypt, from theGreat Sphinx at Giza to the famous burial of Tutankhamun, are among the world's most renowned works of art. Less well known, but equally impressive, are the rare and ancient images of people, animals, and landscapes made by the Egyptians who lived prior to the age of the pharaohs, when the formal conventions of Egyptian art had not yet fully evolved. With illustrations of more than 180objects created from about 4000 to 2650 BC, Dawn of Egyptian Art presents the art forms and iconography in which the early Egyptians recorded their beliefs about the land where they lived, the yearly events that took place there, and what they thought was important to the eternal survival of their world. Comprehensive texts explore the origins and early development of the culture of ancient Egypt while discussing the relationship between image and writing as well as the representation of the self and the universe.

"One of the most impressive publications on the early Egyptian art I have seen. Beautifully illustrated with over 180 photographs of objects from exhibition and with an eye-catching cover… [Dawn of Egyptian Art] looks and feels like a 'coffee table' book but the text is both readable and highly informative."—Victor Blunden, Ancient Egypt (Victoria Blunden Ancient Egypt 2012-07-01)

“Through essays contributed by curators, conservators, professors, archeologists, and scholars, and with illustrations of the exhibition’s lovely objects, Patch has assembled a rich catalog…with lavish illustrations, accessible text, and useful notes, this catalog is appropriate for interested general readers and scholars.”—Library Journal

    Stunning
    By Ann B. Keller
Everyone is well aware of the magnificence of Egyptian art at the time of the pharaohs, but what about the works of art that proceeded them? These are more simple forms, to be sure, but the elements of the great Egyptian masters have their foothold in this special time. This book embraces that era.

Pristine statues and masks, male and female figurines vie with statuettes of monkeys and other animals, amidst these pages. The funerary excellence at Abydos with its mud brick faade is also fascinating. Some of the pieces, such as ceremonial palettes, are awash in intricately carved designs of animals and birds, writhing snakes and jackals. The excavations at Hierakoupolis were marvelous and I found the extensive section of notes at the back of the book and chronology to be extremely beneficial, as well.

This publication highlights the achievements of scholars and archaeologists dedicated to the study of Predynastic and early pharaonic Egypt.
Thoroughly researched and very good designed piece of work.
It was well written with the help of expert descriptions. Also, lavishly illustrated with excellent photos and easy to read.
The authors are to be commended for conceiving and producing this great effort.

I love history. Art on the other hand I usually can't focus. Then I found a fragment of this book on google books. Its art but offers more historical details than most history books. I had to buy it to read the rest. Me, who has never spent more than $20-$30 on book.
