Thanks for selling this. It was the only edition I had missed in two decades and have been trying to acquire it for about a decade. I understand Spectrum 20 is the last one by the prior editors. Hopefully looking forward to Spectrum 21.

The "usual" (wonderful) gallery of beautiful images

I lost this issue at the original release date (I started to buy the Spectrum series from issue 7). What I noticed, buying the latest printings of number 1,2, 3 and now 4 is that, except the digital techniques (now more advanced than in the past), the quality of the works collected is always the same. Excellent.

Pure magic.

Almost any one of the pieces in this collection is worth the price of the book. There are no monkey swathes of paint against white canvas here, my friends. No, here are works that will quicken your breath, accelerate your heartbeat, and ignite the synapses in your mind. And as my fellow reviewer commented, this book is a wellspring of inspiration. Just flip the pages and see for your self. Works like "Number 16" and "Prudence II" present this point more eloquently than I ever could. I have only one pique. There was no art from any of the Galerie Morpheus artists like Giger, Yerka, and De Es. Despite this, I urge all fans of SF and Fantasy art to buy this book. You won't be dissappointed.

About the Author

Joan Packer Isenberg is Professor Emerita of Education at George Mason University, where she also served as associate dean in the College of Education and Human Development from 2003-2011 and as the founding director of the Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning (ASTL) program from 1999-2003. She is past president of the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators and was the 2006 recipient of the Early Childhood Teacher Educator of the Year Award from NAECTE/Allyn & Bacon. Isenberg also served as the first visiting scholar for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) from 2002-2003. For most of her academic career she has studied and written about early childhood curriculum, play, and arts integration, particularly as they affect children’s learning and development. She has taught children from preschool through grade four in both public and private settings. Among her numerous authored or co-authored publications are Creative Thinking and Arts-Based Learning (6th edition 2014), Exploring Your Role in Early Childhood Education (4th edition, 2012), The Master’s Degree in Education as Teacher Professional Development (2012, Rowman & Littlefield), and Major Trends and Issues in Early Childhood Education, (2nd edition, 2003). She currently is doctoral affiliate faculty with the Union Institute and University.

Jennifer L. Durham is a certified K-12 special education teacher. She is currently the Curriculum and Technology Coordinator at the Lab School of Washington. Dr. Durham is also a professor at American University in the School of Education, Teaching, and Health and a supervisor of student teachers. Her work at American University focuses both on formal and informal assessment and the preparation of special education teachers to be able to use multi-sensory, project-based, arts-integrated learning in their teaching practices.� She received her bachelor’s degree from Austin College in Sherman, TX; her master’s degree from American University in Washington, DC, and her Ph. D. in special education and arts integration from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. ����� Dr. Durham has been a public school teacher, an owner of her own private educational consulting company, and has completed over 120 hours of professional development in arts integration through the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.� With Professor Isenberg, Dr. Durham completed a four-year study of the effects of an arts integration program on school culture in selected schools in the Washington D.C. area. She has presented at several conferences on the Power of the Arts in everyday learning.

About the Author
Professor Halgin received his Ph. D. from Fordham University, and completed a 3-year fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, prior to joining the faculty of the University of Massachusetts in 1977. He is a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist and has had over two decades of clinical, supervisory, and consulting experience. At the University of Massachusetts, his course in Abnormal Psychology is one of the most popular offerings on campus, attracting an enrollment of more than 500 students each semester. In recent years, he has also offered this course at Amherst College and Smith College. His teaching has been recognized at the university and national level. A University of Massachusetts Alumni Distinguished Professor, he was honored with the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and his teaching was recognized by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology of the American Psychological Association. In April 2003, his teaching was highlighted in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Professor Halgin is the author of more than fifty journal articles and book chapters in the fields of psychotherapy, clinical supervision, and professional issues in psychology.

Perfect gift!

I got this for my 2 year old son for Christmas. The book is great, big pictures of Monster Jam trucks with enough words to make it a devent read aloud. The book includes other types of trucks as well. The cardboard ramp is pretty durable to use with the truck. The truck is light and flimsy but my son still loved it and it works well on the ramp. Stickers are cute and the poster is big and good quality. All in all a great gift for the price!

Her parents and grandmother are unable to convince her otherwise until Junie hits upon the idea of putting her unflattering school picture under the bed to frighten the monster. In Junie B. Jones Is Not a Crook, the little girl discovers that "finders keepers losers weepers" is not an appealing philosophy when she loses the special gloves her grandfather gave her and the child who finds them doesn't take them to the lost and found. Junie's first-person narration is sprinkled with deliberate grammatical errors and misunderstood word usage in an attempt to show a five-year-old's viewpoint ("I runned home," "They got stoled on purpose."). Precocious use of sophisticated language is also used to achieve an intended humorous effect. The black-and-white, full- and half-page illustrations reflect Junie's cockeyed view of the world and will help attract beginning chapter-book readers. The issues the child is dealing with are right on target for the intended age group, but Junie's personality is more annoying than endearing and the humor lacks freshness and spontaneity. At twenty-one, the handsome, ambitious, eccentric graduate student invented what would become the most influential theory of rational human behavior in modern social science. Nash's contribution to game theory would ultimately revolutionize the field of economics.

As a young professor at MIT, still in his twenties, Nash dazzled the mathematical world by solving a series of deep problems deemed "impossible" by other mathematicians. As unconventional in his private life as in his mathematics, Nash fathered a child with a woman he did not marry. At the height of the McCarthy era, he was expelled as a security risk from the supersecret RAND Corporation -- the Cold War think tank where he was a consultant.

At thirty, Nash was poised to take his dreamed-of place in the pantheon of history's greatest mathematicians. His associates included the most renowned mathematicians and economists of the era: Norbert Wiener, John Milnor, Alexandre Grothendieck, Kenneth Arrow, Robert Solow, and Paul Samuelson. He married an exotic and beautiful MIT physics student, Alicia Larde. They had a son. Then Nash suffered a catastrophic mental breakdown.

Nasar details Nash's harrowing descent into insanity -- his bizarre delusions that he was the Prince of Peace; his resignation from MIT, flight to Europe, and attempt to renounce his American citizenship; his repeated hospitalizations, from the storied McLean, where he came to know the poet Robert Lowell, to the crowded wards of a state hospital; his "enforced interludes of rationality" during which he was able to return briefly to mathematical research. Nash and his wife were divorced in 1963, but Alicia Nash continued to care for him and for their mathematically gifted son, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager. Saved from homelessness by his loyal ex-wife and protected by a handful of mathematical friends, Nash lived quietly in Princeton for many years, a dreamy, ghostlike figure who scrawled numerological messages on blackboards, all but forgotten by the outside world.

His early achievements, however, fired the imagination of a new generation of scholars. At age sixty-six, twin miracles -- a spontaneous remission of his illness and the sudden decision of the Nobel Prize committee to honor his contributions to game theory -- restored the world to him. The Phantom was John Nash, one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his generation, who had spiraled into schizophrenia in the 1950s. His most important work had been in game theory, which by the 1980s was underpinning a large part of economics. Nasar has written a notable biography of mathematical genius John Forbes Nash (b. 1928), a founder of game theory, a RAND Cold War strategist and winner of a 1994 Nobel Prize in economics. She charts his plunge into paranoid schizophrenia beginning at age 30 and his spontaneous recovery in the early 1990s after decades of torment. He attributes his remission to will power; he stopped taking antipsychotic drugs in 1970 but underwent a half-dozen involuntary hospitalizations. Born in West Virginia, the flamboyant mathematical wizard rubbed elbows at Princeton and MIT with Einstein, John von Neumann and Norbert Wiener. He compartmentalized his secret personal life, shows Nasar, hiding his homosexual affairs with colleagues from his mistress, a nurse who bore him a son out of wedlock, while he also courted Alicia Larde, an MIT physics student whom he married in 1957. Their son, John, born in 1959, became a mathematician and suffers from episodic schizophrenia. Alicia divorced Nash in 1963, but they began living together again as a couple around 1970. Today Nash, whose mathematical contributions span cosmology, geometry, computer architecture and international trade, devotes himself to caring for his son. Nasar, an economics correspondent for the New York Times, is equally adept at probing the puzzle of schizophrenia and giving a nontechnical context for Nash's mathematical and scientific ideas.

A Strange Mind

Firstly, my hat off to the writer Sylvia Nasar who herself must be brilliant to have understood all of what Nash discovered and that of the economists, mathematicians and men of science around him. Of course each person reading the book will deal with this complex material differently, in accordance with his interests and background.
This book provides a tremendous insight into the period in which Nash lived, the world of Academia and all the Universities and Professors and geniuses who made up that world. More specifically, one gets into the "skin" of Nash, getting to know him first as a "normal" person, which in his case, was never a simple matter, being the genius he was and then following him through personal events and then through his illness which, perhaps, is the most interesting and enlightening part of the book.
Mental illness, in all its different aspects is always a mystery, a source of "curiosity" for most people who are not affected by such illnesses. Nasar slowly takes us along this path, almost making us "understand" how this person becomes transformed in his behavior and yet, how there were always "signs" that indeed this might happen to him. His mind, so difficult to fathom, his creativity and brainstorms, show a man always living on the edge; a fertile mind, overactive in imagination and ingenuity. It is almost no surprise that he will eventually go over that edge, but therein lies his genius. Could he have thought of what he thought if he were a mere mortal, an ordinary "normal" person?? For him, normalacy meant dullness, acceptance, conformity.
He enjoyed his "madness" even in his most terrible suffering.
Schitzophrenia is an unrelenting, unmerciful disease. How Nash got a hold of "it" and himself, remains as mysterious as the man and the disease itself.
I enjoyed the book tremendously because it leads you into a new world of madness, yes, but without the usual stereotypes and predjuces.and stigmas attached to it.
While the movie was incredibile, the book is totally different, unromanticized and totally naked.

A Real Education about Mental Health

I found the book to be a somewhat deep but educational read regarding not only the life of Dr. John Nash, but giving a much deeper insight into the details of mental health. I had seen the movie before reading the book and was immediately taken by how much different and somewhat lacking the movie was as compared to the book. I understand that Hollywood can only attempt to capture the essence of the book due to time and budget constraints so I don't discourage one from seeing the movie. None the less, the book was well worth reading and filled with many deep and personal details about the genius and then disabling struggles John Nash and his family and friends had to deal with throughout his dealings with his mental health issues and slow and endless recovery. Again, I found this a real education about mental health and a very good read.

though I love the movie

A fascinating and maybe even important book on maths and insanity. I saw the movie a number of times before purchasing the book and there are significant discrepancies. In real life Nash wasn't as innocent and noble as portrayed by Russell Crowe. And what a relief that it is, as, though I love the movie, one's experience of schizophrenia is of something harsh, immediate and grating rather than a dreamy kind of thing. It's tough to live with. This is how Nash also felt. However, even if the book is grimmer, it too has a number of wonderfully uplifting moments. Even if it is sad that Nash "lost" so much of life due to his illness, the fact remains that he attained status and made a contribution granted only to a few. And as he himself indicated, the place where the aliens spoke from, was also the place the mathematical insights came from. Great book.
