A Q&A with Dave Gibbons on the Making of Watchmen

Question: You were tasked with drawing new illustrations of key shots from the new Watchmen film. Was it a difficult challenge to re-imagine your work in this movie format?

Dave Gibbons: I don’t think that I actually did many key shots from the film. I had to actually imagine them rather than exactly recreate what was going to be in the movie. But as far as the drawings I did for the licensing purposes, accuracy was the real key so that they looked exactly like the movie. Whereas doing the graphic novel was creating stuff afresh and being very creative, this was more the case of interpreting something that already existed. So it was rather more a commercial art job than a creative thing.

Q: How many scenes from the original graphic novel did you redraw in the new "movie" format?

DG: I kind of did them piecemeal, these licensing drawings. I did do a section of storyboarding for Zack Snyder. There is a part of the movie that isn’t in the graphic novel and he wanted to see how I would have drawn it, if it had been in the graphic novel. So I redid the storyboards as three pages of comic on the nine-panel grid, also getting it coloured by John Higgins so it looked authentic. But I think there were probably only 3 or 4 scenes that I drew, which were from the movie.

Q: What was your working method for producing these new illustrations from the film? And how has it changed from when you originally illustrated Watchmen?

DG: When you’re producing things from existing material, you have to look at and assemble the references... you know, keep looking backwards and forwards to make sure what you’re drawing is accurate to what’s in the photos. I did have lots of photos from the movie and in some cases I had more or less the illustration I was going to do in photo form, which made it a lot easier. On others I had to construct it from various references: really just the usual illustrator’s job of drawing something to reference. And on the original illustrations of Watchmen, I was free to come up with exactly the angles and exactly the costumes and everything that I wanted to. When you’ve designed a costume and drawn it a few times, you actually internalize it and you find you can draw it without having to refer to reference at all. So in some ways it’s more creative and in some ways it’s easier!

Q: In Watchmen: The Art of the Film, there are concept designs by other artists of their visions of your iconic characters. What do you think of their versions and did you offer any guidance while they were working on these?

DG: It’s always really interesting to see versions of your characters drawn by other artists. You tend to see things in them that you hadn’t noticed before. So I really enjoyed looking at those. I certainly didn’t offer them any guidance. The purpose of getting those kinds of drawings done is to get a fresh perspective on what exists. I noticed actually that they really stuck more closely to my original designs than those, but I really enjoyed seeing them.

Q: Watchmen: Portraits is Clay Enos’s stunning black and white collection of photos of each character from the Watchmen movie. What was it like looking through this book at all the characters you had conceived years ago now being brought to life by actors?

DG: It’s rather interesting; you know if you look at the Watching the Watchmen book you can see these characters as fairly sketchy rough conceptual versions. Then when you look at Clay’s book you can actually see them right down to counting the number of pores on the skin on the end of their noses! It’s incredible high focus! It’s like zooming in through space and time to look at the surface of some moon of Saturn or something. I thoroughly enjoyed his book... it had a real artistic quality to it that was really so good. And of course to see these actors who so much are the embodiment of what I drew, that it’s a tremendous thrill to see them made flesh!

Q: Watchmen: The Film Companion features some stills from the animated version of The Black Freighter. What do you think of the look and design of this animated feature?

DG: It looks really interesting! Although I drew my version in the comic book in a kind of horror-comic style, these are very much in a savage manga style. I think they work really well... they’ve got the kind of manic intensity, which I think that work should have and I really can’t wait to see the whole feature. I’ve seen the trailer for it and that looks great and again they’ve used a lot of the compositions that I came up with but just translated them to this kind of very modern drawn animation.

Q: How much time did you spend on the set of Watchmen? Was it a surreal experience to see your work recreated like this?

DG: I was on the set of Watchmen for a couple of days and it really was surreal to walk through a door and then suddenly be in the presence of all these people in living breathing flesh! I was there for what you would call the Crimebusters meeting where they were all there in costume in the same room, which was incredible. They had obviously planned that so I would get to see everyone. It was surreal though quite a wonderful experience to see it come to life.

Dave Gibbons is best known for his iconic artwork on the groundbreaking graphic novel Watchmen. He has also written and/or drawn many other comics titles, including Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Doctor Who and his semi-autobiographical graphic novel The Originals.

Chip Kidd has been called "the world's best book-jacket designer" and "the closest thing to a rock star" in graphic design today. His iconic designs include the cover for Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park. He is also a writer, musician and avid comics fan.

It's a collectible book...but not much more

I don't feel the need to praise Alan Moore's and Dave Gibbon's "WATCHMEN" anymore than it has been praised already, and I do feel that a supplemental book to look back on the original material was a great idea, but for the most part "WATCHING THE WATCHMEN" just catalogues some of the original sketches and storyboard layouts. Without question, the quality of the printing is up to snuff, and the design of the book is flawless...the problem is there just isn't much content. The book would do better if there was more writing and reflection on the part of Gibbons (and Moore, of course), because most readers are probably more curious as to the ideas and sensibility that helped shape the original "WATCHMEN." There is not much in that department - of course one can just as easily look all of that up on Wikipedia at this point.

But overall I have no regrets in buying this book. It is a nice collector's item for those who have an affinity for the original "WATCHMEN" - just don't expect it to be much more than that.

A Wonderful Glimpse into the Process

Never before had I seen that much thought and effort go into a project. It was January 1985 and I was representing DC Comics to the British talent. Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons and I spent a delightful afternoon reviewing the project and Dave showed me sketches for the characters, the covers and even a marketing campaign that was as sophisticated as it was smart. It's a terrific that so much of this material was saved and is finally seeing the light of day, so Dave's wonderful efforts can be celebrated. The book is a visual treat and a terrific companion to the graphic novel.

Great book, but....

HARD TO READ. My eyes were bleeding by the end of it. Purple and green type on black backgrounds does not a pleasurable reading experience make. I was surprised at how badly the content other than the phenomenal artwork was presented...THAT is my ONLY grip and what keeps it from being a five star book. If it were not for the content in fact it would be a 2.3 star book, but Sigh...Yes it does have that content, which is AMAZING. The fact that Dave Gibbons has saved some of these amazing artifacts of what now is a cultural touchstone and will be even MORE so when the movie come out, its pretty special.

Some highlights.

1. The sketches, which show HOW Dave and Alan came about creating the characters.

2. Actual inkblots used to inspire Rorshach

3. Copies of the actual typewritten on onion-skin manuscript from Alan Moore.

This book is like I said AMAZING, But it doesn't tell the whole story, just part of it, maybe because some was told in the Absolute Watchmen edition published a few years back. This is a companion book that is a must have for either of those editions. If you have Absolute Watchmen, get this book. If you have this book only, go out and get Absolute Watchmen.

I know I will find myself looking at this book as I do the other editions of the Watchmen I have.

Watchmen is and will be the Citizen Kane of comic books.

Hard To Read Wealth of Children's Litature Course

If you plan to teach a children's literature course, then this book possesses nearly all of the information, history, and important milestones that you need...if you can get by the stilted language.

It reads well for someone like me who studies/collects children's literature as a personal hobby; however, for the average reader? Get ready for a painful struggle.

I would suggest using it in conjunction with two other books: Jacob & Tunnell's more classroom-focused CHILDREN'S LITERATURE, BRIEFLY and Rebecca Luken's more historcal/applicable balanced CRITICAL HANDBOOK OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.

Soul Sapping Academia

It is hard to imagine a book that could take the wonder of children's literature and more thoroughly destroy it. The cover illustration makes you feel momentarily safe. Then the texts begins and hope is slowly and mercilessly trodden into the dust. Take this for example:

"Another approach to the study of art is recommended by Stephen F. Eisenman and Thomas Crow, who use art criticism that focuses on the relationship between art and ideology, the economic and social conditions expressed in the art (a Marxist approach to criticism)."

Now pause briefly and consider this is a book about *children's* literature. Let us continue to some questions that should be used in this analysis:

"What role does class play in the work of both the artist and the viewer?

In what way might the artwork serve as propaganda?

What is the dominant ideology that the artist challenged?"

I'm now preparing to write a whithering review of the oppression inherent in the "Cat and the Hat".

All of this wouldn't be so bad if books were actually presented. Instead we get lots of small type with a reference to a random children's title in every other paragraph and the impression that children's literature is either dominated by the enlightened academic class or club wielding classist Neanderthals. You know, the kind that make you read books like "Through the Eyes of a Child".

DO NOT USE THIS IN YOUR CLASS. You will be torturing your students in a manner not allowed by the constitution. Hopefully, that at least, will carry some weight.

Worest textbook I have ever read.

I usually like to read my textbooks cover to cover, but for the first time I find a text book unbearable to read. My physics textbooks are more entertaining than this book. The author simply writes thousands of three sentence summaries of children's books and places them in an obtuse sections. When the author is not doing these three sentence summaries she is filling up the book with citing any little idea some random person had. For the love of god just use a footnote and paraphrase so it is at least half readable.

Not As Good As The Mind's Eye -- But What Is?

I must preface this by admitting that I am a Wheel of Time collector: Hardcovers, paperbacks, British editions, young adult editions, you name it. I even thought that The World of the Wheel of Time was great, despite the horrific character artwork. So for me to give this five stars might not be as weighty as a New York Times Book Review, but I will at least explain in my attempt to help guide people in whether or not they should spend their $ for this.

If you're not a Wheel of Time fan, you should pick up the "regular" book first (that would be The Eye of the World). It's not that you'd be lost if you read this -- the story is pretty easy to pick up (the graphic novel covers the first 147 pages of the paperback, plus the prologue and also the "Ravens" prologue seen in the YA edition). It's just that I don't think it would mean as much.

To fans of WOT -- which is probably most of you -- I would say grab it, with one caveat. The characters and places will often not look as they do in your head, possibly to your lessened enjoyment. But how can they? People even disagreed with Robert Jordan on how to pronounce some character names, so how can we agree on how Rand al'Thor is supposed to look? But that's where I got some of my enjoyment. Even though I've still never seen a satisfactory Trolloc, it's worth it to see other people's interpretations of RJ's work, even if it might disagree with mine.

Having said that, what about specifics? Following the basic character descriptions in the books, they get them right. They have their basic traits; of course, if they were going to do this project at all, they had *better*. Rand is tall and has red hair, Nynaeve has her braid, and Moiraine wears blue (although sometimes I have trouble telling Mat and Perrin apart). But even more: Cenn Buie looks just as old and cranky as he should, Lews Therin looks sad and demented at the same time, and I happen to think that Thom's coat looks perfect.

I don't always agree with the artists' choices. Sometimes the late-teen Egwene looks younger than her 9-year-old self, and I wish they would've drawn a Draghkar up close. But like I said, the mind's eye. My housemate, a WOTfreak too, didn't like how some of the background faces were half-drawn, but that didn't bother me.

There are bonus materials that might help you decide: a cover gallery that includes a full-page portrait of the 13 Forsaken (they're not labeled, which is kind of annoying as Mesaana and Moghedien look almost identical), and bonus character sketches, including some for people not even in this book (Min, Loial), giving hope that there will be more to come.

If nothing else, you'll get your money's worth if you read it, share it with another WOTmaniac, and spend awhile arguing about it.

My rating: 5 out of 5 (and yes, I'll buy a British edition if they slap a different cover on it)

Good, enjoyable, follows correctly the book, good graphics.

I love the WOT saga and this comic (the vol 1) seems a good representation in graphics and content. It's entertaining, has suspense, follows the book and shows most of the twists ;) However, I recommend to read the full book when you can ;) Comics and books always will present different depts of the history. And this history deserves a full dive ;) I can't wait to read the second volume. Enjoy!

Great start to an epic series

FIrst off I want to start by saying that I'm new to graphic novels but this particular read has made me happy that I have got into them. I love fantasy novels and am a big time Ice & Fire fan by George RR Martin so "The Eye of the World" stood out to me. I have not read any of the Wheel of Time novels to compare the two but I can say that both the story and illustrations are amazing.

If you're someone that loves both fantasy and comics than this is a can't miss as far as I'm concerned. I just ordered Vol. 2 in the series and can't wait to start that.

Only complaint I have is that when I ordered the book the last 15-20 pages at the top were all damaged. As a collector I was very upset about this as I like to have my books/novels in perfect condition.

La historia es siempre una recreaci�n de hechos ver�dicos. La memoria retiene las impresiones de aquellos sucesos de los que ha sido testigo el hombre, quien al devolverlos a la vida-�� ya sea por la narraci�n oral o el testimonio escrito- los cambia o modifica.
Para rehacer el pasado se hacen necesarias valoraciones m�ltiples, la sumo de testigos y, no pocas veces, se requiere aun m�s: tratar de desentra�ar el porqu� de las afirmaciones sustentadas y de las pasiones de los individuos que ofrecen la prueba final de procesos complejos y dif�ciles.
Pero la historia novelada es un arte que no todos los que escriben pueden ejercitar con acierto.
Al leer Flores para una leyenda, pude seguir las huellas de esos personajes que Miguel Sabater �llam� a participar en esta puesta en escena y, sobre todo, de los involucrados en el acto principal de la trama.
El trasfondo escogido es el retablo barroco de La Habana y en especifico el barrio de San Isidro, donde habitan, sin lugar a duda, el anima y el misterio del gentil y elegante Alberto Yarini que llev� dos vidas en una: la del gal�n enamorado y generoso, protector de la mujer infortunada; y la del joven que, en indeclinable culto al placer recibe de las f�minas su lealtad y favores.
En medio del convulso panorama nacional, reina la figura del gallo, que aparece en la conciencia popular como parte de los mitos cubanos, plenos de simbolog�a. Este es el valeroso contendiente que lucha hasta la muerte en la reyerta de la valla; el cantor de la revoluci�n francesa que adornaba la empu�adura del sable de Toussaint �Louverture o el que, posado sobre los hierros y madero del arado, los liberales cubanos asumieron como divisa en los a�os iniciales e inciertos de la Republica.
Resulta parad�jico que el apelativo pudiera ser adjudicado al que seria representante del Partido Conservador, lo cual nos hace meditar sobre lo imprecise de las catalogaciones pol�ticas, ya que, en una y en otra vertientes en las que se escindi� la opini�n cubana, militaban notables personalidades que el autor del libro relaciona� cuando ���� por ejemplo describe la concentraci�n de Guiines, que me hace evocar la desbandada del Guatao o del Perico.
Al caer abatido en el coraz�n de San Isidro, nuestro protagonista se torna victima de corruptos for�neos que pretend�an pescar en las aguas revueltas. Para entonces, los sectores populares ve�an a Yarini como un pol�tico diferente, defensor de los pobres y negado a la pr�ctica de la discriminaci�n racial.
Por sus modales, apariencia aristocr�tica y elegante manera de vestir era el paradigma de la belleza viril, del valor temerario, que pervivir� hasta nuestros d�as. As� durante el sepelio, aunque muchos pudieron marchar en autos, otros prefirieron caminar para llevar su f�retro en hombros.
Todav�a estaba fresca en la memoria aquella escena del caf� en que el joven-ahora extinto-propinara un pu�etazo al diplom�tico norteamericano en defensa del general del Ejercito Libertador Jes�s Rab�, acto que revelaba en Alberto el rasgo de un car�cter impulsivo, de su orgullo habanero, y de rechazo a la presencia estadounidense en la vida nacional.

De esta manera, entre lagrimas y ofrendas, llega el ata�d a la necr�polis donde, en extra�a mezcolanza, se confunden las clases sociales y las representaciones pol�ticas. Juntos aparecen a la luz del d�a amigos de Yarini,integrantes de la mas temida y respetable fraternidad de hombres del barrio y de los muelles; altos dignatarios del gobierno; el rector de la Universidad e ilustres miembros de su claustro; familiares encabezados por su padre, el respetado catedr�tico don Cirilo Yarini,y la atribulada madre; y entre la multitud, las hijas de Mar�a Magdalena que lloraron por toda la eternidad al se�orito Alberto....
Escrita por un historiador e investigador sagaz, la novela nos deja una admiraci�n contenida que alimenta la llama de un mito que el tiempo no podr� apagar, a pesar de in�tiles y continuas explicaciones.
Queda pues, Flores para una leyenda como una muestra inefable de historia novelada que ,adem�s -seg�n confiesa el propio Sabater-,rinde culto a la sincera y verdadera amistad, que se mantiene de por vida ,sin importar diferencias de cuna ni raza.

Miguel �ngel Sabater Reyes (La Habana, 1960). Licenciado en Filolog�a en la Universidad de la Habana, Cuba. Escritor, conferencista e investigador hist�rico.
Ha publicado m�s de 90 art�culos, entrevistas, reportajes, cr�nicas, relatos y cuentos desde 1994 hasta 2014, en la revista "Palabra Nueva" de la Arquidi�cesis de La Habana. Igualmente, ha publicado art�culos de car�cter hist�rico y archiv�stico en varios n�meros del Bolet�n del Archivo Nacional de Cuba.

Great Book for Newcomers and Prince2 Foundation Material

Background- I am a Cisco professional with about 4 years experience in administration and engineering.

I was interested in a certification with project management and read this while waiting for my Prince2 manual to come in. I finished half the book and it definitely helped me get into Prince2 topics and familiar with the elements.

When my manual came in, I was overwhelmed by the information it contained. Prince2 For Beginners is great, covers most of the topics you need and will make you confident in learning the stuff. I passed my exam, I would of definitely done better if I read the whole book front to back. Take notes while you read this book and you'll be golden with some practice on the side.
