About the Author
Kathy Norris says her passion for fiber arts began more than 30 years ago when she first started knitting with needles. In recent years, she taught herself to use a knitting wheel (loom) while teaching at an arts and craft store. Her first loom knit designs were created to use in her classes to teach others how to use the loom. Now her designs can be found in various publications. In addition to knitting, she is a bead and crochet artist.

Innovative designs for loom knitting

Kathy Norris is one of the most innovative loom knitters around and her current book is a testament to this talented designer. Written for use with the plastic round and long looms, this is one of the best and most well organized loom knitting books for both the beginner and for those of us who want to learn new techniques and stitch patterns.

The first part of the book lays the ground work needed by offering several versions of basic hat designs. Next is an overview of general stitches and techniques required to make more advanced projects featured in the remainder of the book. The basic hat designs are the only easy skill level projects in the book and are included mainly as an instructional module for beginners. The other projects are high quality intermediate skill level designs that anyone would be proud to create or give as gifts.

The projects in this book include:
* Three hat patterns that focus on teaching the basics for beginners. These are the only easy skill level projects.
* A stunning sampler afghan that utilizes twelve different stitch pattern blocks with an attached I-cord edging that is loom knitted directly onto the afghan.

i love this book, easy to understand, well written, detailed instuctions and pictures makes it easy to follow and learn the stitches. i am working on the 12 stitch afgahan now and pleased with each block. i would recommend this book for the everyone.

Good starter, but needs some tweaks

I never could get the hang of needle knitting, so I was really happy to hear about loom knitting and find out how simple the process is. I ordered this book as a kind of Loom Knitting 101 course and have been pretty pleased so far.

Since I'm a beginner, I can't really say how innovative the designs are or anything like that. I can say that I was able to get started right away and produce hats and scarves that were of professional-looking quality. I made a striped hat for my little boy and had friends ask where I bought it, so that was pretty good!

The problem I have with the book is mainly with the instructions for cables and the pattern given for the basketweave section of the 12-square afghan. While the cable instructions say you must "loosely" knit, they don't really emphasize just how loose they should be and the best way to go about ensuring this. I wound up searching on YouTube until I found a video of someone knitting cables. Once I saw that you should use markers on your cable section and double-wrap those pegs on the row prior to the cable, I was able to produce beautiful stitches.

The other thing is that the pattern listed for basketweave seems incorrect. Again, I'm a beginner and it's possible that I just screwed up. However, when I finished the square and bound it off and pulled it to examine the swatch, there were no horizontal lines. It was only vertical squares. In my thinking, if it was an error on my end where I missed a line of instructions, only a portion of the swatch would have been messed up. The swatch was consistent, though. Now, it's still a cute pattern. I kind of like it more than the basketweave. It's like a funky, retro look that brings to mind Flint Lockwood's "coolness enhancement" paint job from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. But, if someone is really wanting the basketweave, she would be understandably upset with the results.

About the Author
"A PhD from the University of Saugor, (now Dr. Hari Singh Gour University), Sagar, R S Mehrotra has a teaching and research experience of more than 35 years. He retired from Kurukshetra University as a Professor in 1997. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Western Ontario, London; Ontario, Canada (1968–1970) and a Fulbright Fellow at the University of California, Riverside Campus (1979). He is a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad; and was elected President of the Indian Phytopathological Society (1990), President of the Indian Society of Plant Pathologists (1992), President of the Mycological Society of India (1996), and President of the Botany Section of Indian Science Congress (1997). He was the recipient of the Birbal Sahni Gold Medal of the Indian Botanical Society in 1998. Professor Mehrotra delivered the Dastur Memorial Lecture of the Indian Phytopathological Society in 2010. Dr Mehrotra, along with his research associates, has published around 200 research papers in national and international journals and has authored 5 books. Ashok Aggarwal is currently working as Professor of Botany and teaches Plant Pathology, Mycology, and Microbiology at the Department of Botany, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, where he has been a faculty member for the last 25 years. He is a member of several scientific organizations and has published more than 140 research papers and review articles in national and international journals. He has written a monograph in collaboration with Dr R S Mehrotra on the topic entitled “Phytophthora Diseases in India” in 2001. He has also edited another book entitled Glimpses of Plant Sciences in 2002. In addition, he has written a textbook entitled Plant Pathology, 2nd edition (published by McGraw Hill Education (India) Private Ltd., New Delhi) with Professor R S Mehrotra in 2003. Dr. Aggarwal has guided many MPhil and PhD students on diverse aspects of mycorrhizal fungi. "

This is EMPOWERMENT!

I have cancer. I was told by my medical practitioners that my cancer was beyond their treatments - full body bone marrow involvement, etc. This was SEVEN YEARS AGO (1995). I relate this only as a statement of my "credentials" to offer this opinion to those who may have recently been handed the "medical Whammy" (a term coined by Andrew Weil, M.D.) of a life-threatening or terminal diagnosis. I do not credit Louise Hay's work with my current health; I only recently was gifted with a copy of this tape, which reinforces conclusions drawn from my own experience and personal journey.
Louise Hay does not offer "miracle cures," she offers HEALING concepts. She most emphatically DOES NOT place BLAME for an illness of any kind on the person with the illness, or their parents!!! Quite the opposite, which she clearly states on this tape, repeatedly. Nor does she pretend to have all the answers, or suggest anyone discard the counsel of their medical professionals.
What she DOES do is provide a wonderful collection of affirmations for personal empowerment - a course of action that enables one to regain some measure of control over their life - which, as anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis can tell you, is the first thing to go!
If you are looking for a cure - something done to you from outside - then you will not find it here. (Of course not! Our cultural fear of cancer is rooted in its medical status as "incurable.")
If, however, you are seeking help in HEALING - that which originates within - and you are ready to assume responsibility for your own life and become an active partner with your physicians in regaining your health, then I believe you will find much inspiration and positive energy in the loving words of Louise Hay, who has faced her own cancer, put her "philosophy" to the ultimate test, and triumphed.

Great Attitude Changer!

I will be a 20 year cancer survivor in remission this Nov. '08.

My mom had gotten me this in cassette tape in '88 when I was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 15. The docs. gave me 6 months to live then.

At the time of finding out about the cancer and the life expectancy I had gone into a depression.

My parents gave me this cassette and told me to listen to it everyday. I even went to sleep with this playing.

After 3-4 weeks my attitude changed and I felt more positive and just felt good inside.

I do feel this had helped me recover. Attitude is part of the battle. If you don't care or too depressed you won't fight the disease.

Her soothing voice helped me sleep at night along with the music in the background.

I'm ordering a copy on cd to replace my cassette. I highly recommend this to anyone that is sick.

Mack's Mix of Anecdotes and Analysis

When Lee Mack’s autobiography, Mack the Life, arrived in the post, I thought What the hell kind of editor let a comedian get away with his first book clocking in at 415 pages? I was recently the editor of a comedy memoir, and one thing I learned from researching the genre was that readers don’t want more than 250 pages of listening to you. Even Lee Mack says he only does one half of a standup show (meaning no intermission) because that’s more than enough to ask of people to sit through listening to one person. However, despite my initial reaction, the 415 pages flew by, and when I got to the end, I wished there were more pages because I was sad it was over.

Mack the Life is a chronological telling of Lee Mack (ne McKillop)’s life from growing up in a pub to today’s status of one of Britain’s best liked comedians. It’s strictly a “how I got into comedy” with a bit of psychoanalysis thrown in book, and so does not go into family life or much else.

This is a self-aware book. You get the sense that Lee Mack has a first-time-author glee, as he will sometimes purposely leave in typos because he found them amusing when coming across them in the proofread. He will footnote certain marker points, like 70,000 with a Jaffa Cake reward. He doesn’t do research and admits his ignorance if he forgets someone’s name or has made something up because he doesn’t actually know how it works. He’s also a comedian who likes to second guess his audience, as you’ll know if you’re familiar with his “some wanker always says comedian” t-shirt routine, so in the book you’ll find gags like this one:

“Comedians don’t go round seeing funny things, they see things that they can make funny. There’s an important difference. In fact, some comedians do the almost impossible and see funny things that they then make unfunny, but enough of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (fill in your own name according to who you dislike. And if you’re thinking of putting my name in there, count the dashes. I’m ahead of you.)"

Although there are a lot of interesting pre-showbiz stories–riding Red Rum, being fired from the bluecoats for calling the audience the C-word, training to be a professional darts player–the book really peaks once Mack starts to break into the industry. That first moment he was ever in a comedy club and got to see the likes of Eddie Izzard and Steve Coogan, how his career kicked off with a live sketch show he did with Catherine Tate, how Steve Coogan later offered him a TV gig based on those sketches, how he was cast in the American remake of that show opposite Kelsey Grammer, and the agonizing scenes of his So You Think You’re Funny performance going horribly wrong from inside a prop wardrobe. Mack’s analysis of showbiz is thorough (and largely what I was hoping most to read about). He talks about the differences between actors and comedians who act, sitcoms vs. realism comedy dramas, and American sitcoms vs. British sitcoms. If there’s anything missing from this section, it’s characterization. Although he seems to have liked a lot of people, you get no sense of “what was it like to work with Catherine Tate?” for example. You get very little real-time scenes, except for the wardrobe scene, of course. It’s hard to tell if this is something he could have improved upon or if it was a conscious decision because he thought characterization wasn’t relevant or it was dangerous from a legal standpoint.

In the same way that Hot Fuzz highlights paperwork because it takes up most of police officers’ time yet is never mentioned in films and TV, Mack the Life highlights the writing process because a key to comedy success is making the jokes look effortless, which means it’s easy to forget (and yet essential to forget) that most of a comedian’s time is spent writing. We see in detail the thought process that went into creating the characters, situation, and plot of the Not Going Out pilot, as though we are experiencing his brainstorm in real time. One of the best parts of the book is when he gives us a bunch of his awful early one-liners.

“Picking up a rubber snake and doing a deliberately bad ventriloquist act saying ‘One plus one is two, two plus two is four, four plus four is eights.’ Then, looking at the audience, I would say ‘He’s an adder.’"

Creating Not Going Out is personally my favorite part of the book. In many ways, the British sitcom (as a genre) was dead by the time Not Going Out started shooting, but that’s why they did it. Mack talks about his research in creating the sitcom, how he’d been directed that there needs to be a joke a page, but when he looked at American sitcoms, which have a big team of writers instead of just one like British sitcoms, he realized they needed a lot more than just one joke per page. He goes on to talk about casting and how he preferred working with comedians who could act rather than actors who could deliver a joke. His original co-star left after one season, which he blames on himself for being difficult to work with as a control freak, but also recognizes an underlying problem of cultural differences (her being American and him being Lancastrian). In fact, if you are American, this may be a very good bio for you to read because of the occasional musings on the differences between British and American comedy/showbiz/psyches.

Mack has nothing but wonderful things to say about his current co-stars and talks about how happy he is that his cast are all normal people. This is something else I like about the book: He recognizes the difference between telly people and normal people. He’s annoyed that telly people are all yes-men who will tell you that your ideas are great even if they aren’t, when all he wants, as a writer, is some proper, truthful feedback. He’s also a comedian who has said that his real friends (save perhaps Sean Lock and Catherine Tate) are not comedians. I like that he’s able to take a few paces back from showbiz and recognize that it isn’t how the rest of the world functions and it isn’t a world he wants to be completely consumed by. Although this book isn’t about his family, you definitely come away from it understanding that his wife and three kids are his priority and he looks forward to retiring early so he can potter about the house and eat chocolate in the shed.

Finally, each chapter ends with a transcription of meetings he had with a psychologist who read an earlier draft of the book. He hired her in hopes of adding some depth to the book (which he says he did go back and retool the book some after meeting with her). Toward the beginning of the book, she diagnoses him with ADHD and explains his self preservation, likely built up in reaction to his father walking out on his family. Mack’s distracted thoughts intermingle with the dialogue. After these initial sessions, the later psychologist segments just serve as devices for gags, such as admitting he changed something she said to make him look better. I wish these sections went more into depth, but what I found most interesting was his own self analysis. He recognizes that he (as well as many comedians) value the trait of being funny as more important (and sometimes it is the only important trait) than anything else, like being kind or loyal. I can relate to this. I was recently asked how my job interview went. I replied, “I made the HR person laugh a few times.” I thought nothing strange about my response until I read Mack the Life and realized that that is not the traditional response to someone asking how a job interview went. Usually people talk about the questions or their answers, showing up on time, whether they were asked back. I realized that I responded to the question in the way I did because coming across as funny was really the only thing I valued.

Before I read Mack the Life, I’d heard that Lee Mack had written the book completely on his own, no ghostwriter (possibly no developmental editor either?), so as a developmental editor myself, I was wary to the quality of the writing. There were definitely things that could have been edited, as he does that thing that comics do where they write the same thing two or three times but in different ways. I think this must come from writing for the stage because if you can get three consecutive laughs by saying the same thing in three different ways, that’s three times the laughs you would have gotten by saying it once. The book medium doesn’t have the same rules because it’s not about quantity of laughs but about moving the story and giving the reader new information. This is a minor point and something other comedian book writers do sometimes. Overall, the book is well-written. He doesn’t get in the way of his writing more than he needs to, he manages to address the reader directly without turning the reader off, and he keeps the prose lively with surprising gags that will make you laugh out loud in a crowded train. As much as he dances around the ending, discussing the difficulties in ending a book (so difficult, in fact, he wanted to do two books so that he could put off writing the ending), it actually has the perfect tone. It’s slowed down. It’s slightly reflective but mostly opinionated, conversational. You can almost hear the fasten seatbelt sign ding on as the plane gets ready to relax into it’s final descent. I know, not a good metaphor as Lee Mack is afraid of flying.

Brilliant !

I adore Lee Mack. This book doesn't disappoint. Its lively, witty and entertaining. I have really enjoyed reading Lee's explanations of the craft of comedy and how, like most things in life, the effortless effect we see on TV or live on stage, is actually the culmination of hard work.

I love his small, insightful comments, such as the difference between being recognised and recognition; and the name-altering trend universities went through in the mid-90s.

Highly recommended if you have watched Lee in 'Not Going Out' or as a team captain on 'Would I Lie to You' and you would like to know more about him.

Hilarious and different

Mixing autobiography with one-liners throughout, this is a fine read by one of the funniest men alive. There's a reason you can't take your eyes off of him during each episode of Not Going Out...and why hs tours sell out everywhere he does standup. Lee's one of Britain's most celebrated actor/comedians righ now--though less familiar to Americans. A book I laughed through, and then gave three copies as holiday presents.

Fast paced and chilling!

Excellent writing in time for the Rio Olympics. I would cancel my trip and be too scared to go after reading this book. Fast paced with great characters! I got to see a side of Rio that I never knew about. Another winner in the Private series.

As always I love the Private series. The twists and turns are intertwined in the story and tied up at the end. I enjoy seeing more of Jack Morgan in the stories since it was his character that got me hooked on the series. I have to admit this was a little tearjerker that I was not expecting. I recommend this to anyone that likes thrillers.

Too expensive for digital book. Patterson lost me a while ago when he started lending his name to other writers. His style is not the same and I switched to younger, fresher writers.

Review--Message from Earth

Peter Fenton used intimately personal thoughts about philosophy to draw me into this book. His philosophical range is much broader than my own and compelling for that reason. When I realized the subtlety I enjoyed in reading was a simple and clear conversational writing style, I was hooked. I like to be drawn in and hooked. There is so much to read, but not like this story-filled lodge journey, Message from Earth.
As a mostly white woman, I have thoroughly enjoyed participating in various lodges and Inipi ceremonies. Even though I can grasp and appreciate any day set aside for purification, I feel the anomaly of crossing the cultural divide. Sweat lodge is distinctly Native American. Regularly, for more than a decade, I benefited from the inner conversations and altered states as Dr. Fenton describes. Mine were different, of course, but I felt he transported me back to those lodge experiences, and I too could feel the tremendous heat. Through simple page turnings, looking for more descriptions that matched my own, I felt involved in a deep conversation with the author.
This storied-journey takes many turns--to the South American jungles, to engaging prayer possibilities, to a spiritual inquiry about purification and remaking one's blood--all the while Peter Fenton describes how each Inipi worked through his spirit. In his rapt circling around breath and final breath, intrigue about death invited my own thoughts to venture forth.
Good writing means I am a participant in the conversation. I began to think about prayers, purification, and about water pourers and friends from past sweat lodge ceremonies. These were all good things to contemplate and review once again. I feel grateful the author brought them to my mind in this easy way.
Personal beliefs thread through this sweet little masterpiece like a shuttle weaving back and forth. Here, Peter Fenton asks himself about the powers that guide the Universe, about how one forms a belief system, and especially about death, so I found the opening to do the same. Personal beliefs are made powerful through expression: what are they and how does each one guide our life?
Open and transparent, the author shares many lessons he has gathered from his directions of travel, to the far East, the far North and far to the South. As a Western man, delving into life's deep mysteries, ancient ways have taught Dr. Fenton how to return to easier, quieter, slower ways. Ancient practices are still around to teach each of us that spirit lives in all things, but we have to be slowed to learn well.

Interesting, informative, easy read

I am not Native American, nor is my husband. However, we both have a strong interest in the Native American sweat lodge. It is too hot for me, but my husband attends a local sweat lodge group each month. He receives such an incredible blessing, that I wanted to learn more about it and understand what he brings home to tell me. The local sweat lodge is with Native Americans and follows the rituals closely. I only know that from this book. It is very well written and kept my interest.

About the Author

James Cuno is president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust. He served as president and director of the Art Institute of Chicago from 2004 until 2011, the Courtauld Institute of Art from 2002 until 2004, and the Harvard University Art Museums from 1991 to 2002. He lives in Los Angeles.

A pleasure of a book

Museums Matter is a first rate look at the history and philosophy behind the modern museum and a (for me) eye opening understanding of the way museums have and do influence our immediate culture--indeed in many actually creating it.

Christmas is coming!

This is a pretty, little book....great as a gift. Some of the language is needlessly obscure which slows the flow of the narrative, The book does make interesting observations while sharing bits of history.
