About the Author
Amy Snow began working in the field of acupressure in 1976. She, along with Nancy Zidonis, is the co-founder and Director of Education of Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute which offers a comprehensive, (12 courses), certificate training program in equine, canine and feline acupressure worldwide. Amy is the co-author of three animal acupressure books and numerous articles published in national and international publications. She has studied Traditional Chinese Medicine and other healing arts. As Adjunct Faculty in the equine program at Hocking College Amy teaches two of their hands-on courses. Currently, she serves as the Founding Co-Chairman of The National Board of Animal Acupressure & Massage (NBCAAM).

A great book for all dog owners

Acu-Dog is an amazing resource that allows dog owners to help keep their dogs happy and healthy through the use of acupressure. There is a lot of very useful information that is presented clearly and concisely, with several charts and pictures to further help pet owners utilize acupressure effectively for their dogs. The specific condition segment is another great tool provided in this book. As an animal acupressurist I use this book as a trusted reference.

Helps Demystify TCM!

I have always been fascinated by Traditional Chinese Medicine but its many layers tended to make my head spin a bit. Acu-Dog helps take the mystery out of TCM with its easy-to-understand language about Chi, Yin and Yang, Meridians, Acupoints, using acupressure to help balance your dog to help and prevent dis-ease, and much, much more. If you already have "The Well-Connected Dog", you will see a large amount of new information and fantastic color charts and photos that are invaluable in Acu-Dog. This is a reference book that needs to be in every dog lover's library! Use the knowledge you will gain from this incredible book and your dog will thank you immensely for it.

An Excellent TCM Reference Book

As an equine acupressure practitioner and a dog lover, I find Acu-Dog a Guide to Canine Acupressure to be one of my most reliable reference books. I use it often as a review and for specific questions that arise. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a layered approach to health and the deeper one delves, the more layers present. This book is written in a way that makes the layers far less daunting and the information readily accessible. I love the photographs, clear diagrams, and the anatomical references for finding the acupressure points. The information is written in a clear and succinct way, making it user friendly to the reader new to Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as the experienced acupressure practitioner. This is the reference book I reach for first.

The San Francisco Oracle, published in the Haight-Ashbury from 1966 to 1968, was one of the most unique and beautiful publications of the 60's. Writers who appeared in The Oracle include: Gary Snyder, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Alan Watts, Stephen Levine, Lenore Kandel, Tim Leary, Michael McClure, Paul Krassner, Buckminster Fuller, Carl Rogers, Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), Robert Theobald, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and others. Artists include many of the great San Francisco Poster artists such as: Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelly, Bruce Conner, Michael Bowen and Gary Grimshaw. During the 60's there was an incredible surge of creative innovation in journalism. In response to the mainstream medias control of information regarding the Vietnam War, the anti-war movement and the cultural changes that were sweeping America, every large city, many college campuses and even some high schools created their own underground newspapers. Out of this creative ferment arose one publication that burst the boundaries of the newspaper format both in graphic and in written content; The San Francisco Oracle. The Oracle printed artwork in bold colors, merging written content and artistic vision. At times it was difficult to tell if the paper was reflecting the changes in the new culture or originating them. Its style and technical innovations were copied by many of the alternative papers and some of the more adventurous mainstream media. The Oracle is now a cherished legend. Those who remember it compare its beauty to the medieval illuminated manuscripts and the illustrated books of Blake and Dori.

Famous for publishing such writers as Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, William Burroughs, Alan Watts, Timothy Leary, Buckminster Fuller, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the tabloid also was well-known for its artwork, graphic designs, and rainbow colors. Editor Cohen, who was one of the paper's founders, contributes a fascinating history of the publication and its creators and contributors. Despite a table of contents, the book's usefulness as a reference is weakened by the lack of an index, and its $175 price (due to the archival paper used to preserve the book's historical value) makes this facsimile edition an optional purchase for libraries.

If you are interested in psychedelic counterculture, this is it

I was born in Argentina in 1971, so I wasn' t there. But I love the Haight Ashbury movement, what they continued, what they started, what they finished, the questions, the answers, music, paintings, tolerance and failure, religion, psychedelic trips and mind exploration. LSD and banana joints. The art and articles are great..., Snyder, Leary, Guinsberg, Kandel... If you are interested in the beat generation, the hippies or the Kesey connection, just buy it.

Whether you are a researcher with an interest in this fascinating period or want to relive those times Im sure you would find this collection of significance! My only regret was that they chose a smaller page size than the bound volume but at about $900.00 difference I will live with that.The San Francisco Oracle

Bring The Color Gold, Bring Photos of Personal Saints...

After viewing Allan Cohen's slide show history on the "Haight-Ashbury in the 60s" CD-Rom, I decided to buy the SF Oracle Facsimile Edition. It is a beautifully crafted treasure trove, which allows you to go back in time and revisit the days of Haight-Ashbury in its purest form, from the point of view of the artists and mystics of the day.
Though I was only 12 years old during the Summer of Love, I used to shop on Haight Street until one day I was told I couldn't go down there anymore because of the Hippies. Of course I went anyway, and became hooked on the colorful posters and music. Let this book be your guide to a really interesting time in our history.

If you write COBOL programs (or want to), you need this book

Structured COBOL is a brand new addition to the excellent catalog of mainframe computer programming books published by Mike Murach and Associates. If you are programming on the IBM mainframe platform, or intend to be, this is a title you should have on your desk. Although beginning programmers are included in the target audience, the real value of this material will be as a reference for on-the-job programmers.
At more than 760 pages, it covers everything you would need to research. Information is presented in an innovative format where each page of narrative is paired with a facing page containing a concise statement of COBOL syntax, suggested guidelines for the use of the COBOL feature, and one or more practical examples of the feature in code.
If you are a beginning programmer, the coverage of structured design, coding, and testing methodology is the best I have ever seen. Used as a text to learn COBOL, the language syntax is designed to be generic enough to work under any COBOL compiler. The chapters of the first section of the book are intended to be read in sequence as the information they provide each builds on the prior chapter. You will be writing COBOL code beginning in chapter 2. The remaining sections cover advanced, special-purpose features and techniques and may be read in the order that best suits the reader.
Although the COBOL coding is generic enough to be useful on any platform and compiler, the ultimate goal of the book is aimed at the IBM mainframe environment. The last section of the text covers such IBM specific topics as using ISPF and SDSF to edit, compile, and debug a COBOL program. It also includes sections on designing COBOL programs to run under CICS and to access DB2 databases.
As with all Murach books, the focus of Structured COBOL is getting real work done in the real world. All of the example code in the book can be applied directly to real world situations: dealing with pre-2000 dates in legacy programs, updating sequential files using matching record techniques, and creating and updating indexed datasets with primary only or primary plus alternate record keys. There is even a section describing how to deal with maintenance on programs written prior to the advent of structured design methods.

I've just browsed this book, which was delivered just 5 minutes ago, but I was very disapointed. Most examples are still in the old fashion COBOL way from the 70's and are not taking advantage of "Mixed Case", "Scope Terminators"(not even mentioned in the index), which makes a COBOL program structured. Use of the "full stop (.)" should be forbidden, where it's not needed, and that's only at the end of a paragraph. Using "MOVE 'Y' TO EOF_SWITCH" instead of "Set EOF to True" even more disqualifies this book as a "structured programming" book, which should be more up-to-date in thinking of how to use Cobol. The examples on OO-Cobol seem to be ok, maybe written by another author?
This book is of course a good reference for Cobol programmers, but I was expecting a more "modern" aproach to using the Cobol language and have examples "extremly" structured and in every minute take advantage of possibilities available in the language. Younger programmers are used to other structured languages, e.g Visual Basic and Java, and should be informed that the Cobol language is not a "left over from the 60's" but is is real structured programming language. Old programs have to be rewritten or Cobol will not survive. My expectation was that Murach would help us, but this is not really the case!

A heart warming story! I cried, but they were happy tears for the happy ending, and a story full of hope and courage

Wow!! Thanks to Kindle, I was able to download the book at about one in the morning, and it's now seven in the morning. I have not read a book in one sitting, or in one night for years!

People who saw the ABC interview with Diane Sawyer saw how warm and lovely this young lady is, and her book is like the interview but a hundred times warmer and more personal.

Jaycee's story is refreshing in that it's written by her, and not from a co-author. Much of the book are pages and pages taken from the actual journal entries she wrote while in her backyard prison. You can tell that her journal entries read in much same way as the rest of the book, so in a sense, the entire book is a continuation of her journaling and her ongoing mission in life to help others. For example, it's hard to tell when you're reading from her old journal entries from her more current writings of when she's authoring this book. It's really all one voice, and you definitely get a feel for how her voice resonates through.

Some readers on comment sections of news sites have mentioned they don't want to read the book due to graphic scenes being portrayed. Yes, these scenes are there, but written in a very mature way that I think people should really read. The book doesn't focus on these scenes, as rather the book focuses on simply sharing her story and conveying her sense of hope that's still beaming today. But the sexual abuse scenes are important to all of America as they describe horrifying sexual acts that often go by generic terms like 'rape' and 'molestation.' But what do those mean? Jaycee paints a much clearer picture, and in doing so, acts as the voice for all the victims of sexual abuse that can't share their story.

In America, sexual abuse is something that gets pushed under the rug, or punished. It's like there's no in between. Jaycee didn't know what the word rape meant while the act was being done to her, and I remember when I was 11 (I was also born in 1980 like Jaycee), I didn't know what the word rape meant either. I don't think I learned what the word meant until I was 13 or 14. Perhaps if more people learn about sexual abuse, and what it actually entails, then more can be done to protect innocent victims. And more importantly, when people realize what goes on behind closed doors of rapists, perhaps there won't be parole after just a few years for somebody who had already raped a woman for eight hours straight in a warehouse. Jaycee does an excellent job showing how her captor is a repeat offender, one that therapy cannot solve. Jaycee goes on to describe the failure of the therapists that her captor visited, and how they enabled him more than anything by allowing him to make excuses rather than be accountable for his behavior.

With all this being said, this book is probably not for young teenagers to read by themselves, as Jaycee shares vivid accounts of sexual abuses that happened to her; abuses she didn't even know the names for at the time. Cautiously I note, the entire book would be a great one for a parent and teenager to read and discuss together, with parental guidance on parts of the book that are tough to read or perhaps need proper perspective put into place. (Parents, you must read the book first, as you're the one to judge if the book is appropriate or not for your teenager). In my opinion, I think it's a subject that needs to be talked about more, even if it's difficult to read, but of course, that's up to parental discretion.

The only part I found that was hard to read in the book were the journal entries that talk about her thoughts and reactions to her captor's ongoing talk about Angels and how her captor believed the Angels control people. I don't know how many pages in the regular book, but it was a few pages on the Kindle. While it's tough to read, it illuminates just how unimaginably tougher it would be to live in that kind of manipulative situation on a daily basis.

What's also tough but enlightening to read is how much compassion she has for all the animals she cared for. Through all the events taking place upon her rescue, she even asks a couple officers if they can check on her animals and make sure they're okay, at which time the officers made sure to find them and get them temporary foster homes. The irony that develops through her selfless caring often mirrored her own reality: For example, Jaycee starts feeling really badly about one of her cats being locked up with her all the time, and feeling guilty for wanting the cat's company, she shares how a shed is no place for a cat. Yet she never shows any kind of self-pity on her own situation...all you see is your strength and courage.

I just can't believe these things happened to an 11 year old girl. You really get a sense into the manipulation of the captors (I refuse to say their names) and how through the horror of everything, Jaycee completely shines light throughout her memoir. It's like there's not even a 'hate' bone in her body -- she's an inspiration to us all; that love and hope conquers no matter. And the best thing is that the entire memoir is written so warmly, it's like Jaycee is sharing her story with you directly at the dinner table. And she goes on to share, now that she and her family are free, something very important to her: The simple daily act of cooking great foods and eating at the dinner table.

One last thing, in her journal entries she mentions her goals and plans for her future once she becomes free -- so many of them she's actually doing!

A tale of survival and pain

The first thing you need to know about Jaycee Dugard's book, is it is indeed a very difficult thing to read. It is a beautifully written, pull no punches account of the 18 years she spent in captivity with a very sick man, Phillip Garrido.

In a note from the author at the beginning of the book, Dugard explains that she wrote the book to attempt to convey the overwhelming confusion she endured during her years in captivity and to begin to unravel the damage that was done to she and her family. She chronicles her experience with brutal honesty. She writes about missing her mother and worrying that she will never see her again. Her dependence upon her kidnapper grows the more he isolates her from the world. For long periods of time he was the only other human being that she saw.

As you can tell from the Table of Contents, she spares no detail. You witness her physical and psychological transformation from a scared child held against her will to a woman who bears his children and runs a business with him until she is discovered. This truly is an exploration of her past. As profound as this book is in its horrific detail, it is not a triumphant, feel-good story. Other than her rescue, don't expect many warm fuzzies from this one.

If Jaycee's book interests you, I Love Yous Are for White People: A Memoir (P.S.) is another you'll undoubtedly want to read. Amazing to see people triumph over such adversity, and retell their stories so brilliantly.

GREAT READ! I cried sad and happy tears!

I can imagine this book took a lot of courage to write! So if I see one more review saying that it doesn't go into enough detail I will die! Also she had a only 5th grade education and was living in a backyard for 18 years so excuse her for not having the best grammar or writing skills. I personally liked that it was written in her own words. I felt I was hearing the story as told by 11 year old Jaycee. It makes me see her perspective on what happened through an 11 year old's eyes. If one is reading the book and actually comprehending what Jaycee talks about, animals were what kept her going. So if all she talks about is cats it's because that's all she had for so long.
A few reviews claimed the book was repetitive, there are times that's true but instead of thinking of that negatively and bashing Jaycee's writing abilities, I see it as a recovering woman trying to piece together a story of 18 years of captivity. A story in which people begged and pried into her privacy just to get. This book also aided in her healing she wanted to write in her own words she explains why if you read the preface!!!!
This book was a hard read but an excellent insight on Jaycee's perseverance, strength and her unbelievable ability to survive and overcome a horrific event. I never went into reading this book thinking it would contain superior grammar and writing style. I applaud her for sharing her story. (She also isn't a bad writer) I recommend this book for sure!

book transcends advice for consultants and goes to the heart of building lasting relationships in any environment

I have used consultants in my business career and I wish that they had used the techniques in this book, as they approached their engagement with my company. I was given this book by a former colleague of mine who now owns and operates a medium sized business. In giving me the book he asked that I read it, so that I could refer him to a consultant who worked in a manner similar to one the out-lined in this book. The knowledge shared in this book could be used in any setting where building and maintaining relationships is the key to understanding the client's needs. This understanding ultimately leads to successful outcomes for the client and the consultant. The authors assume that the reader is beyond the basic MBA skills of consulting, number crunching and standard strategy development. The book utilizes a new way of interacting with clients who are functioning in a multicultural, multilayer and dynamic world. The book should be used by the professional consultant to elevate their skills so that they are able to work in this evolving environment. It is ultimately useful for professionals who want to develop and maintain long term relationships with their clients. This book is a "how to book" designed for the working professional. Any consultant or head of an organization should find the advice in this book useful. Douglas Walton is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Winnipeg. An internationally known scholar and author of more than thirty books in the areas of argumentation, logic, and artificial intelligence, he has received major research grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Isaak Walton Killiam Memorial Foundation. Dr Walton also received the ISSA Prize from the International Society for the Study of Argumentation for his contributions to research on fallacies, argumentation, and informal logic.

The Arts of Persuasion

Three children grew up together in a Greek garden: Logic, Dialectic and Rhetoric. According to Walton, Logic became rigorous and formalized and after the Enlightenment was seen as the only true method of argumentation. The problem though is that logical argument is not necessarily persuasive and persuasive argument is not necessarily logical. Rhetoric survived somewhat altered, and dialectic "faded into obscurity". Thus begins a fairly interesting book.

Canadian philosopher Douglas Walton makes a delightful case for reviving the empirical study of the techniques of discourse. Early on he differentiates types of dialog by purpose: persuasion, inquiry, negotiation, information seeking, deliberation and eristic (rhetoric that serves to attack one's opponent) - useful to reflect which mode each "side" may be in at any given time. He discusses the use of emotion and imagery to short circuit long chains of evidence and logic and the role of inducement, temptation and threats (ad baculum). He covers classical fallacies coming up with five variations of the "ad hominem" argument. Ad populum, an appeal to popular opinion is no longer considered completely disreputable - voting itself is a use of the technique. Another interesting topic is the use (or abuse) of definition. Terms such as "unemployment", "justice" or "rape" vary across jurisdictions and over time so comparison of different contexts can be very misleading. A rise or fall in drug related crime may be the result of a change in legislation, not a change in current social behaviour.

Many of the examples are based on topical items that would be familiar to most readers. Star Trek illustrates an amusing appeal to values where Jean Luc Picard tries to convince Klingon, Ferengi and Federation listeners to engage in a dangerous mission by invoking the ideals of honour, profit and exploration respectively. To illustrate a complex ad hominen he uses and aspect of the Clinton impeachment hearings (the Battalion case) and the charge that Al Gore's appeal to pathos in the death of his sister to smoking related cancer was hypocritical (poisoning the well) as hi as an ad hominem; there are examples of "push polls" which are designed to implant information rather than to gather it in. He applies an anti-drunk driving campaign in Canada and an AIDS information campaign in Australia (featuring the Grim Reaper bowling down average Australians) as appeals to fear. The coverage surveying and polling is informative and the author describes the use of the relatively high touch high cost "deliberative poll" where respondents are gathered together for several hours or even days to discuss the issues and propose solutions - I'll add that this method was recently tried here (it failed) in Canada where the government of the day had proposed to introduce a form of proportional representation in parliament.

I liked the book but it did have a couple of problems. The first chapter is a bit of a barrier - Walton references theories of some other writers but doesn't fill in enough detal as to their key arguments, making one feel like a wallflower at the party. Another is that the author spent very a great deal of his time discussing the philosophical groundings of rhetoric, but very little effort in looking at the difference modes of interaction in different hot media such as online discussions, blogs and social media - this was the promise that brought me to the book in the first place. IMV the human dimension of time and permanence has shifted - not only do we have an extensive record of previous statements can gleefully be picked apart, the rate at which we return to the record and our degree of willingness to change it is something worth looking at. Broadcast media is touched upon in the discussion of the Respondent-to-Dialog Problem (pp138) where argument is made to a mass audience, seemingly inviting dialog, but its really a proposed discussion framework to be carried out in the outside world - an actual dialog with the framers does not actually occur. Similarly the discussion of media argumentation in the last chapter, while detailed and useful, seems a bit old school with it's focus on traditional advertising. Nevertheless I found Walton to be an interesting writer with a lot to tell us.

Argumentation theory finds warrant for its claim to analytic superiority from the idea that we naturally evaluate the relative strength of arguments from the standpoint of conventionally established, objective criteria, and not by transposing arguments into deductive schemae and evaluating for validity. Because the claims of the vast majority of arguments are uncertain, we habitually evaluate for strength, rather than try to prove validity. Argumentation theory thus provides tools for the analysis of arguments, more accessible, user-friendly, and utile, to a public not initiated to the rigor of deductive proof, which is, in itself, limited in application, and disputable in its methodology (esp. re:truth-theory, quantification).

The study of propaganda, such a factor in the arguments of corporate owned media pundits (no linguistic confusion intended), is particularly instructive. While the abstract nature of the subject makes for admittedly dry reading, the importance of the discussion here, and its significance for our future, justifies perserverance. Can one really afford to remain unschooled in argument in times like these? This book is the best effort yet at a one-stop shop.

I did not like this book at all. This book was for a class I was taking and it was a very difficult read. After a while all the pages where beginning to look the same. For those who enjoyed it, I applaud you because you did something that was impossible for me and that was to READ IT.....
